SINGAPORE - Two men were arrested on Monday for attempting to rob a taxi driver, police said on Tuesday.

The pair, aged 21 and 23, are believed to have boarded the taxi at Mandai Road at about 1.45pm and told the cabby to go to Loyang, near Tampines.

When they got there they then redirected the cabby to Chuan Hoe Avenue, near Pasir Ris - before he noticed one of the men take a knife from a bag.

He immediately got out of the taxi and alerted police.

The two suspects tried to flee but were arrested by officers from Ang Mo Kio Division.

Police also seized items including a knife, hammer, spanner, gloves and socks for investigations.

Attempted armed robbery carries a jail term of up to seven years and at least 12 strokes of the cane.
