More Malays say they are Muslim first

Malays are increasingly identifying themselves by religion rather than by ethnicity or nationality, unlike the other races in Malaysia, according to an upcoming survey report.

Asked if they see themselves as Malaysian, Malay or Muslim first, about 60 per cent chose Muslim, up from 54 per cent a decade ago, said Mr Ibrahim Suffian, executive director of independent pollster Merdeka Centre.

Conversely, the percentage of those who saw themselves as Malay fell to 6 per cent from 11 per cent over the same period.

Malays are the only ethnic group where a majority identified themselves with religion, Mr Ibrahim told The Straits Times.

Most Chinese and Indians, on the other hand, identified themselves by nationality.

About 58 per cent of Chinese and 63 per cent of Indians saw themselves as Malaysian first, while only 27 per cent of Malays did so.

"It's not that they have any problems identifying themselves as Malays, but being Muslim connotes a deeper sense of belonging," said Mr Ibrahim.

The divergent figures will likely pose a challenge for Malaysia's government, which in recent years has had to grapple with issues of racial and religious harmony, as well as national unity.

The tensions are already being felt in the call among Malays for stricter and wider implementation of Muslim morality codes and laws.

This has also resulted in Malay- centric parties such as the ruling Umno and Parti Islam SeMalaysia increasingly playing the religion card to win support, leading to unhappiness among non-Muslims.

Mr Ibrahim pointed out that Malaysia will have to balance the demands of a potentially more assertive majority with the needs of a sizeable minority.

"You can only go so far down that religious path, given that Muslims still make up less than two-thirds of the population here," he said. "How do you harness the cultural diversity here, rather than let it become a problem?"

Rising religiosity among Malays also comes at a time of swirling concern over Islamic extremism and the influence that the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria militant group is having on Muslims in Malaysia.

Just last month, police arrested two men, aged 28 and 31, who were planning to obtain weapons and launch attacks on VIPs, interests of Western nations and entertainment outlets in the Klang Valley.

Malaysian police had previously said they were monitoring religious schools across the country for signs that they may have become breeding grounds for Islamist extremists.

The Merdeka Centre survey is part of a project on national unity which polled 4,300 participants from February to June. The full results and analysis will be published next month.

There may be aspects in Islam (or any religion) that makes society better, but nowadays these are taken care of by laws, so how does religion in today's world improve society? From what is apparent, the way Islam is interpreted, and practiced, it holds back the advancement of the community that practices it. An example is in the area of arts, music, literature. Depictions of the prophet or Allah are forbidden, how are artists/sculptors/musicians to express themselves? How about the areas of fashion design? How creative can one get with burqas? This is the reason why many Islamic societies remain stuck in the middle ages. Is there a reason why these Malays choose to identify with Islam instead of their race? Do they feel more comfortable in a world where their faith does all the thinking for them, and they just follow? I am not a malay, but if I were, I'd question my faith, and where I disagree, will look for answers/solution outside of it. I would want the freedom to choose my religious inclination, and not follow blindly.

Cheers!

What so great about being a Muslim?

Prophet Muhammad is an asshole! See what kinds of atrocities he and his followers had done?

CB kias Muslims children took our things without asking!

And his mom said good! WTF?

Their children do not get proper upbringing ended up being sent to be slaughtered.

What is there to be proud about a shitty religion you cannot even get out?

Look at Najibee! Steal billions of peasants ringgit!

His mommy must be damn proud of him!

Bro, some people say porn is artistic, some people say it is vulgar, each individual has their own opinion. By the way, you chose to select porn and portray it counter my point, to this, I say that cinematography is an art, movie porn is only a small sub-sector of this its range, and does not represent cinematography. Art is personal, for example, rock music to some is artistic and creative, to others, it is noise. To further elaborate what I said, which Islamic society has advanced Islamic art since the days of Ottoman Empire? As I have said, their societies are mired in old days and nobody in Islam is questioning the way they perceive things. By contrast, most Christian societies have changed along with other social changes and moved with the times.

I didn't say that every Muslim is backward or dull, their society was more forward thinking, but that was a long time ago. Just that today's Islam communities tend to refrain from looking forward and seek justification, comfort from their olden, glorious time.

Cheers!

Dude, the examples you gave don't hold water. So the only way to illustrate a sex scene in a movie is to have actual sex scene with dicks and boobs flying around? So porn is an advancement of arts, music and literature? Same goes with fashion. Are designs by Rick Owens considered an advancement in fashion?

If Islam is interpreted and practiced correctly, it will bring us people like Omar Khayyam and Muḥammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī etc.

You really can't help to feel for them to identify their religion first. They had been forced to do so. Why? Simply because the fastest growing "malay" in Singapore are the Catholic "malay" who frequent Lucky Plaza. No?

These "malays" are very practical people, they fornicate first, which is sinful, then go asking forgiveness, then fornicate thereafter & then go ask for.....that is the identity of the "religion".
