We should, all those who had followed the political developments in Singapore over the last twenty years, share with the younger generation what we know, so that they may be made aware of exactly what Dr. Chee's agendas or ill intentions are against the people of Singapore. I think we owe them at least that:confused:

Well since political films are allowed, someone should make a film about Chee's case of misusing research funds. We should be entitled to know what is the real truth.

Everytime see his name on the news its always for the same old thing....

SINGAPORE (AFP) - - A Singapore opposition leader and six other activists have been charged over protests during the IMF-World Bank annual meetings almost two years ago in the city-state, one of them said Friday.

Chee Soon Juan, the secretary general of the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP), and his sister and fellow party member Chee Siok Chin have been charged along with five others, Chee Siok Chin told AFP.

The charges were read when the accused appeared in court Thursday, she said.

They related to the distribution of flyers ahead of the 2006 International Monetary Fund and World Bank meetings and to a public march conducted without a permit during the meetings, she told AFP.

Under Singapore law, any public protest of at least five people without a permit is deemed illegal.

Chee's applications for a permit during the meetings were denied and he engaged in a three-day standoff with police who stopped him from marching to the conference venue after he delivered a speech at Speakers' Corner, a government-designated free speech area.

Asked for comment about the charges, police on Friday referred inquiries to the courts, where nobody was immediately available for comment.

Chee Soon Juan is one of the few Singaporeans who have publicly spoken against the ruling People's Action Party. He has been jailed repeatedly for defying laws against protests and refusing to pay fines.

His party has no seats in parliament.

The IMF-WB meetings wer to discuss global economic problems and address the poverty in least developed countries. it was not for some Singapore opposition to show case Singapore's problems. Even international protestors knew what to protest about.

The measure of a soldier's success in battle is not about the number of shots he had fired, but by the targets he had hit. It's the same with a debate.

True..true but where is he heading:o....Going against garment with no facts and figures but mere smears will not get him anywhere..:(

Chee merely raised questions of accountability on the governance of S'pore by the govt. Those questions are legitimate questions befitting of an opposition leader.

Any one can raise accountability, but political parties are suppose to form concrete policies, not to blow all insults

Once an opposition party grow to a certain size, it will be able to challenge the incumbent party for running S'pore. But first of all, it needs to increase its membership, attract talented people and get more financial resources.

A realistic political party will be a pragmatic one that take things one step at a time and it must get its priorities right.

Singapore political parties had all the opportunity to grow if they had learnt to respect each other and not show the others faults. SDP is the most unrealistic political party, thinking that protesting and democracy is the only solution

Well said:biggrin:...hopefully CSJ will take the cue and do his party proud by not wasting his time fighting for his own lost cause.

He should start focusing on getting people to believe in him and his policies and hence re-build the SDP into a creditable opposition:wink:

Like what I said earlier...its time for them to re-focus and come up with better plans for the ppl so that the ppl's trust in the party during Chiam's period could be reinstated.

Othewise, the party will continue to be a dis-jointed party fighting for a lost cause:(

Singapore oppositions have no chance to grow as the PAP is too dominant and capable. As the society becomes depolitised, it becomes harder to get people to join oppositions. In addition to this, there are many unjust laws that are designed to restrict the growth of opposition parties.

Hence, SDP is trying to get these unfair laws to be removed. It is a right step in the direction.

The cause is a very good one as it opens up the political space for all oppositions.

Chee's plan is to get his civil disobedience campaign going. Thus far, he has been successful in attracting more people to his cause.
