SINGAPORE: Sun, sand, sea and netball?

Not an odd combination, but rather the beach version of the sport was played at Sentosa on Sunday.

The inaugural Contiki Beach Netball Festival saw Members of Parliament like Teo Ser Luck, Grace Fu and a few others taking on the celebrities in a friendly game.

The day-long event also had 60 teams and 360 players trying their hands at beach netball.

Teams from corporations, junior colleges and tertiary institutions competed in the game.

And the success of the event had prompted organiser Netball Singapore to consider making it an annual affair.

Beach netballers can choose to cover up

[top -IT'S COOL: These players didn't seem bothered about showing some skin at yesterday's tournament.]

By Dawn Tay

IT WAS not all skin as some had feared at Singapore's first beach-netball tournament yesterday.

A last-minute rule change by organisers of the Contiki Beach Netball Festival allowed female participants to wear white fitted tank-tops underneath the official sports top.

my paper reported last Friday that some netballers were unhappy with the original ruling that required all women participants to wear a sports bra.

They went as far as to call it "sexist" and "exploitative".

The ruling was subsequently changed by organisers Netball Singapore on the same day. Its executive director, Mr Cyrus Medora, said: "Taking participants' feedback into consideration, we decided to change the rules.

"We wanted to attract a different type of people - the fun, party, beach crowd - it had nothing to do with sexism."

Around 20 per cent of the female participants of the 60 teams wore a tank-top under their sports bras at the event, which was held at Sentosa's Palawan Beach.

Said participant Brenda Xie, 17: "It was more accommodating and allowed more conservative people to feel less awkward."

Played on sand for the first time in Singapore, the match provided some interesting surprises.

The winning team in the Women's Open category - made up of former university and school players playing together for the first time - upset a team of six former national players in the semi-finals and went on to triumph in the finals.

Organisers said that next year's event is already confirmed - but they would be re-looking the attire ruling.
