Youth counsellor bails out Amos Yee

By Kimberly Spykerman, News 5 Tonight

UPDATED: 21 Apr 2015 19:18

The 16-year-old had spent the weekend and Monday (Apr 20) in remand. No one had posted bail for him, after his bail conditions were changed during a pre-trial conference last Friday.

SINGAPORE: Teenage YouTuber Amos Yee was back at the State Courts on Tuesday (Apr 21) for a bail review. He had been in remand since last Friday, after no bail was posted for him following a pre-trial conference that day.

The 16-year-old appeared in court handcuffed and dressed in a purple jumpsuit just after 4pm, and looked calm. Three lawyers, Alfred Dodwell, Chong Jia Hao and Ervin Tan told the court they would be acting for Yee pro bono. Mr Dodwell said a bailor was on the way, but offered no further details.

Yee's parents were at the State Courts on Tuesday, as well as a few other members of the public who said they were there to show moral support for the teen. Activist Jolovan Wham was spotted at the Court as well.

Yee's pre-trial conference has been moved forward to Apr 30, 3pm.

He was charged with multiple offences on Mar 31, after posting a video which contained disparaging remarks against Christians. On Apr 14, Yee posted on his blog and made two Facebook posts asking for public donations. Doing this meant he flouted his initial bail conditions - which disallowed him to post materials online.

The Court on Friday changed the police bail to a court bail, and set new conditions for bail such as making the YouTube video private and having to report to an Investigation Officer at Bedok Police Station every day at 9am.

YEE BAILED OUT BY YOUTH COUNSELLOR

At about 6.10pm, Yee was brought to the bail centre, still handcuffed and with ankle restraints, accompanied by more than five officers. Youth and family counsellor Vincent Law posted bail for him.

Mr Law said that he came forward to post bail as he is a Christian, and wanted to show he was not offended by Yee's posts. "It seems the charges say he made disparaging remarks about Christianity. I'm a Christian and I'm stepping up to say I'm not offended," said Mr Law, adding that he is a parent as well.

Mr Law, who is not related to the Yee family, hopes that Yee will also be willing to be counselled by him, and that he may respond better to a third party.

YEE AGREED TO PULL DOWN OFFENSIVE POSTS: LAWYER

Asked about his pro-bono contribution to the case, Mr Dodwell told Channel NewsAsia: “Because he’s a 16-year-old boy and everybody requires and needs legal representation. Needless to say, I have been following these news and I learnt that he’s not had any lawyer come forward to represent him and it is not easy for anybody to maneuver through the criminal justice system let alone a 16-year-old.

“We may not agree with him on what he has posted… (but) if it is a crime it has to be proven in the court of law and it needs some level of representation, that’s what we’re doing in this case.”

Mr Dodwell said he had yet to meet with Yee to “have a discussion with him on where he wants to go with this”, but that his client has been cooperative so far, having “immediately agreed” to pull down the offensive posts.

Mr Dodwell also revealed that he is looking to appeal against the current bail conditions, especially a “blanket ruling" preventing Yee’s access to any kind of social media or the Internet.

“I think (accessing) the Internet is like breathing air for the people right now and I think it’s too wide in terms of the ambit, so we’re looking at that to see if it is best to restrict it to perhaps the offending postings,” said Mr Dodwell. “Otherwise, he should be free just like every other citizen or any other person on planet Earth, to be able to use the Internet.”

The lawyers representing Amos Yee will be arrested and end up like Teo Soh Lung.
Teo Soh Lung was arrested many years ago because she represented the alleged criminals and enemies of PAP

Handcuffed and in ankle restraint, did Amos threaten to kill Singaporeans like that pinoy who worked in ttsh?

This country has really gone to the dogs.

Sinkie poodles are worthless pieces of shit, regardless of their rank.

That's why I am like this when any of them gets hurt or killed while on duty:

The poodles are only super on the ball when something like this happens:

When the top level leaders like to bully the "lesser morals", is it any wonder that their underlings will do likewise? They learn by example.

In the Little India riots, the SPF doesn't have enough manpower.

For a TEENAGER being charged for a minor misdemeanour, he gets treated like an ANIMAL and needs MORE THAN FIVE officers to escort him.

Is this the picture of a compassionate society? Or a professional police force that seems to know how to allocate resources?

If we only have that picture to show the world the brutality of the PAP regime.

What PAP can learn from Indon President Jokowi

Protected April 21st, 2015 | Author: Contributions

I am writing this in response to the arrest of Amos Yee. I would like to bring to the attention of LHL, PAP and the Singaporean public a similar case that happened not too long ago, not too far away.

Indonesian President Jokowi
Basically, a satay seller (24) posted on his facebook account pornographic pictures with Jokowi’s head imposed on it. Police arrested the man because it is against Indonesian law to spread pornographic material. I think they are also arresting him on possible defamation charges against the president.
The young man’s parents met Jokowi and his wife to seek forgiveness. Jokowi forgave the man 100% percent, telling him not to repeat his mistake and seemingly arranged for him to be released. Upon release, the local community punished him with cleaning up the mosque for 1 week.
As a gesture of forgiveness and sympathy towards the man’s parents (the family was poor), Jokowi’s wife gave the man’s parents cash.
If Jokowi can bend the laws to pardon an immaturish online troll, maybe LHL can learn something from him.
