[h=1]Men who take a lot of selfies 'show strong links to psychopathic tendencies'[/h]
As if we needed another reason to put a stop to selfies.
A new study published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences has revealed that men who take a lot of selfies will score much higher on tests looking for signs of psychopathy.
Conducted by Ohio State University, the research shows that those very fond of a selfie display a wide range of antisocial behaviours.
Overall, 800 men between the ages of 18 and 40 were quizzed on their attitude towards posting photographs of themselves on social media.
Impulsiveness and a lack of empathy were among the most prevalent, while unsurprisingly the responders were also found to possess high levels of narcissism.
Speaking to the Huffington Post, the main author of the study, Assistant Professor of Communications Jesse Fox, said it was unsurprising to find that those who spent time editing their photos showed signs of narcissism, adding that "this is the first time it has actually been confirmed in a study."
"The more interesting finding is that they score higher on this other antisocial personality trait, psychopathy, and are more prone to self objectification."
The goal of the study was to examine "The Dark Triad", a trio of personality traits – narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy – along with self-objectification as predictors for social behaviour.
The study was able to find that through a combination of these traits, they could predict the time subjects spent on social networks. For instance, narcissism and psychopathy predicted the number of selfies posted on responders' social media sites.
Self-objectification is a trait that means you value appearance above all else. Whether it be the appearance of yourself or that of others, and it can lead to discounting and ignoring other people based purely on the superficial.
"We know that self-objectification leads to a lot of terrible things, like depression and eating disorder in women."
Fox believes that self objectification is becoming an increasing problem due to the continued and expanding use of social networks.
"That means self objectification may become a bigger problem for men, as well as for women."
The study is now being continued to see if women also possess these same personality traits as men, or if their obsession with selfies comes from a different set of motivations.
