According to local supermarkets here such as NTUC FairPrice, Sheng Siong and Prime, there has been a 3 to 10% jump in the sales of instant foods such as instant noodles, frozen foods and other instant meals in the last 2 years.

It seems that more and more Singaporeans are turning to these unhealthy but time-saving alternatives as they find they do not have time to cook.

Senior Director of Purchasing and Merchandising at FairPrice said that “The steady growth in sales suggests that perhaps with a busier and time-tight lifestyle, customers are more inclined to choose quick and easy solutions for some of their meals."

Another possible reason includes an increase in the availability of such frozen meals and the growing popularity of them for late-night snackers.

A spokesperson from Sheng Siong also suggested that foods like instant noodles have become a comfort food for the younger generation which has contributed to its increased sales.

Other factors include people staying up later and needing to eat simple meals for supper.

Instant foods such as instant noodles are also popular with poorer families as they are cheap, however, they are not very nutritious.

Most employers do not like to hire Sinkies because of their inferior gene quality, reservist liabilities or maternity leave. Foreigners do not have to serve reservist, and much fewer of them go on maternity leave. I know of enough sinkie managers and bosses who dislike hiring fellow sinkies because of reservist duties. They now no longer tolerate it because there are enough foreigners and local PRs to choose from. The easy way to avoid trouble with Mindef is to simply fire the sinkie for 'poor work performance' or simply to go through motion during interview and hire someone else.

Perhaps you know the wrong type of Singaporean managers and bosses who are in the minority. From what I hear, many still prefer to hire Singaporeans because it is a lot easier for them to fit and adapt into the Company culture and environment. I still say Singaporeans are worth every cent paid to them and should be hired first.
