METRO VANCOUVER - Residents of a quiet Burnaby neighbourhood awoke to a volley of gunshots early Saturday - only to learn later a man had been shot dead in an apartment building.
The man, who hasn't been named, was found dead of gunshot wounds by police and paramedics in a common area of the apartment building at Maple Place Towers in the 7300-block Halifax Street after several 911 calls reporting gunfire.
Homicide investigators had placed more than a half-dozen yellow evidence markers next to spent shell casings on the driveway beside the 13-storey building and were combing the area for other evidence.
"Our No. 1 priority is collecting evidence" and speaking to potential witnesses, said Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Alexandra Mulvihill.
She had no information on a suspect.
Tenants were allowed to come and go but were denied access to the front lobby and yard, which were bounded by yellow police caution tape.
Almost two dozen police vehicles, including the RCMP's large Tact Group trailer, crowded the leafy street.
Dozens of officers canvassed hundreds of residents in the area near Burnaby Mountain public golf course and a neighbourhood of upscale houses.
"I heard a very loud crack sound and then a half-second pause and then a lot of shots," said Robert Meal, who has lived across the street on the fifth floor of another building since 1992.
He said police are called often to one of the two buildings at the Maple Place Towers complex. Last month, a 39-year-old woman was charged with second-degree murder after her husband, 53, was stabbed in the building next to Saturday's murder.
