Recently it was mentioned that the Wooden shd make comment on Khaw's remark since he says Khaw is the BEST minister we ever have. But unlike Khaw, Wooden "focus" on not to make abandoning elderly parents to old folks' homes rather than whether our elderly shd retire at JB. Looks like Wooden will no longer make quick remark on his peers. I think MIWs watchdogs must have reported to Wooden.

SM Goh urges S'poreans not to make sending parents to elder homes a trend

SINGAPORE: Singapore's Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong has called on Singaporeans not to make abandoning elderly parents in old folks' homes a trend.

This comes after Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan suggested in Parliament recently that cost-conscious Singaporeans could consider staying in nursing homes in Johor where it is cheaper. The comment drew strong response from some quarters.

Mr Goh's message to Singaporeans is to honour the elderly, not just out of respect, but also because of what he calls the "silver tsunami".

SM Goh said: "In twenty years' time, it is estimated that our median age would go up to about 50. Just imagine, you walk into any housing estate and one in two persons you come across will be over 50 years old."

Besides encouraging seniors to stay active by working as long as they can and companies to move away from a fixed retirement age, Mr Goh said younger Singaporeans must also do their part.

"Many MPs have come across sad stories of children throwing their aged parents out of their homes because they are viewed as a burden. Though not widespread, there are also instances of children abandoning their parents in old folks' homes. These are isolated cases but we must ensure they do not become a trend," added Mr Goh.

SM Goh also honoured some 20 elder devotees on Saturday who contributed generously to the Sri Lankaramaya Temple. - CNA/vm

Wooden never know that Ah Khaw is cruel person, he praised him too earlier.

Ah Khaw may be trying to impress somebody but backfires.

Golf courses are underused, abandoned schools are made as hostels, dormitory with school field sold to developers to build condos.
Ah Khaw is really a wicked person, on one hand suggests JB is good for nursing old , but on the other hand says singapore healthcare is cheap---what kind of deceit is that.

Lau Goh chose not to expose but come up another fake idea not to dump the elderly.
All are deceitful. Deserve to be striked by lighting!

Ex-regent talking cock again.

When Rajaratnam died, he had five maids waiting on him.

Most peasants are debt laden and struggling to earn a living and Marboro had just burdened them with expensive pigeonholes, peasants had no choice but to try cut corners for their parents, shame shame shame, woe woe woe to peasantpore, a cruel nation, peasants hard up for short term gain, greedy merchants and leaders chasing super normal profits!!!

I don't really understand why there is all this negativity on nursing homes. Most average households will not be able to provide a sufficient standard of care for the old folks. As most adults are working full-time, they will probably need to engage a maid to look after the elderly. Is this really wise? The maid may not be medically trained and may abuse their charges out of frustration. I am not saying this does not happen in the nursing homes but at least, you can expect a certain level of professional care accorded to the residents. When the adults come home after a long day at work, they would also be very tired and looking after the elderly on top of their children will stress them out even faster.

The sticking point is probably that once people put their elderly relatives into nursing homes, they seldom bother to visit them frequently enough and there is a lack of meaningful activities at the nursing homes for the elderly.

My personal opinion is this: If your folks are healthy enough, let them stay with you. If they need constant or frequent medical attention, it is better to put them in a rest home and visit them often, daily if possible, or better still, take them back home for meals or activities regularly. If the peasants can't even afford to put their folks into rest homes, it is highly unlikely they can afford a similar standard of care in their own homes. It will only stress out the peasants more and may turn out worse for the old folks. The government has not done enough to ensure that the peasants receive a minimum standard of care when they are old or at whatever age, for that matter. They are simply pushing the problem onto the peasants.

Agree totally. Written like someone who understands and has thought over the matter clearly.
Most people who don't understand this problem either don't have personal experience or lack the ability to think logically.
