SINGAPORE: Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong has called on Singaporeans not to make putting elderly parents in nursing homes a trend.

This comes after Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan suggested in Parliament recently that cost-conscious Singaporeans could consider staying in such homes in Johor where it is cheaper. The comment drew strong response from some quarters.

Mr Goh’s message to Singaporeans is to honour the elderly, not just out of respect, but also because of what he calls the “silver tsunami”.

SM Goh said: “In twenty years’ time, it is estimated that our median age would go by to about 50. Just imagine, you walk into any housing estate and one in two persons you come across will be over 50-years-old."

Besides encouraging seniors to stay active by working as long as they can and companies to move away from a fixed retirement age, Mr Goh said younger Singaporeans must also do their part.

"Children throwing their aged parents out of their homes because they are viewed as a burden - though not widespread, there are also instances of children abandoning their parents in old folks' homes. These are isolated cases but we must ensure they do not become a trend," added Mr Goh.

SM Goh also honoured some 20 elder devotees on Saturday who contributed generously to the Sri Lankaramaya Temple. - CNA/vm

How to prolong our working life when Singapore kept bringing in young non-citizen to compete with older Singaporean? Don't just preach, take action to ensure our silver tusnami is a healthy one. With foreigners obstructing graceful aging, you will see more poor people on the streets which will tarnish Singapore govt and our country images.

Mixed messages from different PAP top brass members.

http://health.asiaone.com/Health/News/Story/A1Story20090212-121541.html

Today SM Goh says we shouldn't send the elderly to old folks home- a wise call. But then someone apparently didn't tell Mr. Khaw the same thing a few weeks ago when Mr. Khaw, the Health minister suggested the opposite and even better than that, in saying we should save money by sending them to JB instead.

Is SM Goh rebuking the Health minister, or was SM Goh being out of touch? Will the PAP clarify their stance on this?

He is obviously not very happy with the current leadership and their policies. I suspect LKY forced him to hand over the throne to LHL, the useless one.

Eunuch Goh is part of PAP

Eunuch Goh took part in squeezing 400-500++ billions from Sinkies

Making it so expensive to stay alive in Singapore and to support our parents in Singapore

He is part of that hypocritical bastards in white and running dog of LKY

LEE KUAN YEW LOST AND LOST DUNNO HOW MANY BILLIONS IN TEMASICK AND GIC

EVEN MORE BILLIONS HE THREW AWAY TO HIS DOGS AND COCKROACHES SO THEY CAN TAKE FRENCH COOKING LESSONS

LKY NEED MORE BILLIONS FROM SINKIES WHO VOTED FOR HIM AND FROM THOSE WHO VOIDED THEIR VOTES

EVEN IF YOU VOTE AGAINST HIM, NO DIFFERENCE.

COLLECTIVE PUNISHMENT AS SINKIES DID NOT TRY HARD ENOUGH TO KICK OUT THAT VAMPIRE BASTARD LKY

SO EXPECT EVERYTHING IN SINGAPORE TO GO UP AND UP

BASTARD LKY NEED YOUR $$$$$

HE SCREW YOU AND DEMAND THAT YOU THANK HIM FOR HIS FUCKING 'SUBISIDIESD BULLSHIT' AND 'AFFORDABLE' CON-TALK.

GO ALL OUT TO KICK ALL THOSE BASTARDS OUT

ALL OF THEM

DO NOT WAIT UNTIL ELECTION TIME
THE TIME TO ACT IS NOW!

TALK TO YOUR FRIENDS AND YOUR RELATIVES.

SUPPORT OPPOSITION PARTIES WITH YOUR TIME AND MONEY AND STAND BY THEM AND WITH THEM.

THEY SPEAK FOR YOU AND TRY TO SPEAK FOR YOU.

NOT LKY AND HIS BASTARDS IN WHITE WHO ONLY WANT YOUR MONEY AND TO FUCK YOU.

IF NOT FOR YOURSELF, THEN FOR THE FUTURE OF YOUR CHILDREN

THERE WILL NOT BE AN OBAMA AS PRESIDENT OF USA IF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT THERE WAS INTIMIDATED BY BEATINGS AND LYNCHINGS IN THE PAST.

THE TOBBLING OF LKY WILL NOT BE EASY, AND CAN BE BLOODY AS WELL.
THEY WILL NOT GIVE UP THE BILLIONS THAT THEY SUCKED FROM YOU AND CAN CONTINUE TO SCREW FROM YOU NOW AND IN FUTURE.

ONLY YOU HAVE THE POWER TO SAY 'NO MORE OF THAT' AND THROW EVERYONE OF THOSE BASTARDS OUT

Sinkies must organise themselves

Show that they got balls and can stand up to LKY intimidation.

Big money at stake.

Already 400-500++ billions got sucked and bled by LKY into his Temasick and GIC.
HOW MANY OTHER BILLIONS GOT SUCKED AND USED BY THEM IN GLC WHERE THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS AND MINISTERS AND BASTARDS IN WHITE ARE CHAIRMAN AND CEOS?

EVEN IF NO ELECTIONS, SINKIES MUST SPEAK WITH ALL THEIR FRIENDS AND ALL THEY KNOW

STAND UP TO THAT BASTARD LKY AND PAP BLOODSUCKERS

STAND WITH ALL THOSE THAT FIGHT BASTARD LKY

OR STAND UP YOURSELF IN YOUR CONSTITUENCY

DONT BE BULLIED BY THAT FUCKING COWARD LKY USING HIS CORRUPT KANGAROO COURTS AND ALL THAT HE CAN, AND WILL THROW AT YOU

You will fear them only if you allow yourself to fear them.

Just because THEY want you to fear them, must you fear those fucking bastards?

THEY ONLY CAN RULE YOU , AND BLED YOU , THROUGH FEAR AND INTIMIDATION.

SINKIES,

FIND YOUR BALLS AND STAND UP TO THEM.
THEY WILL THEN FEAR YOU.

AND YOU REGAIN YOUR MONEY AND YOUR FUTURE AND YOUR CHILDREN FUTURE.

DO NOT LET OUR MONEY GO TO FUND PAP DOGS FRENCH COOKING LESSONS

DO NOT DIE IN OLD FOLK HOMES IN JB.

FIND YOUR BALLS AND STAND UP TO THEM

Mr Goh Chok Tong shows his ignorance with his statement. He is totally unaware that a properly equipped and staffed nursing home for the aged can be superior to leaving one's parents at home in the care of a poorly trained foreign maid (no medical skills, language/cultural barriers, nutrition training etc).

When a old person loses his mobility or mental faculties or has severe medical conditions it is downright cruel and unsafe to leave one's aged parents(dementia, non mobile with serious medical conditions) at home alone with a poorly trained maid.

What Goh Chok Tong should be doing is to upgrade the facilities of the current nursing homes in S'pore that look more like C Class Wards with little or no privacy. Go and observe the nursing homes in NZ to see how comfortable they are with private rooms and ensuite toilets. Professional Nurses, dieticians, phsiotherapists etc provide expert geriatric care. Emotional support is given in group activities/outings by by the community of similar aged residents staying in the retirement homes.

The NZ govt is also compassionate enough to give REAL $$$ subsidies (NOT market subsidies) for the old and infirm staying in nursing homes. I forgot the word "COMPASSION" is not in Goh Chok Tong's or the PAP's vocabulary.

For readers wishing to know what nursing homes in NZ are: see below for just an example;

The only reason Sporean hospitals have "upgraded' rooms is for patient who can pay.

Years ago many Canadian hospitals have upgraded their hospitals to single & twin sharing rooms. Prior to the upgrade it was quad sharing rooms.

In my recent visit to a Sporean hospital I saw many foreigners working as nurses, technicians,... but I paid more than what a Canadian would pay for superior Canadian healthcare.

All well said is true, kiwibird. But while I think your points are clear and precise, and I get what you mean, I also believe you have missed out on two factors. The reasons are that because of asian culture, old S'poreans will stay in the homes of their sons or daughters, to be taken care by their kids and of the fact that old folks home are not well funded by government.

To asian culture, taking care of parents when they are old is a filial act by itself. To leave one parents in a nursing/old folks home to anyone is considered to be un-filial. In other words, one would be view as ingrateful, and be seen as "abandoning" the parents in old age.

The second thing is that old folks home rely on donations by rich and ordinary people alike. They are not well funded by government money, unlike in NZ, where welfare is viewed as a viable economical policy. As such here, if homes are limited by scale of their fundraising options, they cannot take in everyone. And those who are taken in, the fees for the sons and/or daughters are high.

In this aspect, its unrealistic and un-filial to say that old people should take the option of being in an old folks home when they have become old. Different cases in different countries calls not for uniform solutions; instead it calls for customization.
