Why not let the old take care of the old?

Foreign Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam suggested this at the Active Ageing Carnival at the Nee Soon GRC, which is also the constituency he manages.

He said, "Given that we are ageing so fast, we'll have to look at slightly senior citizens looking after even older people. Because the number of volunteers is going to be coming down, because people above 65 - many of them will continue working if they are healthy - we are encouraging them to become volunteers."

He also encouraged more elderly Singaporeans to volunteer and to not stop taking care of one another.

To highlight its importance, a new award, the Outstanding Seniors Award, was given out to five elderly volunteers at the event. The oldest recipient is 77 years old.

There are 298 volunteers in the Nee Soon GRC who are above the age of 60.

Mr Shanmugam also said that hospital care can be expensive for the government, which was why wellness centres that provide basic nursing and elderly care are being built.

Nee Soon GRC announced in June that three wellness and care centres for the elderly would be built in the constituency. These centres will provide day care, dementia care and nursing care for the elderly, as well as health screenings and exercise facilities. The centres will be operationally ready by early next year.
