Solar panel in HDB home
By Debbie Yong

THE Ngiam family of Serangoon North had a bright idea.
Why not fit a solar panel outside their Housing Board flat and get free electricity?

A few days later, HDB officials came a-knocking to ask about the structure. But they did not ask the Ngiams to remove the 1m by 0.5m panel fixed to a small roof extension outside the common corridor of the executive maisonette.

Read the full report in The Sunday Times.

solar panel are not free electricity, you need to pay for the panel, and it takes 10-15 yrs to pay for itself.

It will take more than 30 years to get back the ROI not included of interest/inflation. Because not install on the toop roof. The stupid install it in the comman corridor will and sunlight will be block by the building/HDB.

U are missing the point. This chap has the right idea and he needs to show the HDB how to do it. The PAP levies high cost of electricity and water charges. Nothing wrong with conservation to save money and the economy. I remember years ago, another HDB tenant modified his bath/shower water to flush his toilet. HDB should also install rainwater catchment devices on its roof tops to use the water for flushing toilets and what not. As well, as installing solar panels, and even wind turbines on the roofs or the walls.

I think wind turbine is the best. Maybe should encourage all building more than 30 storey/ 100 metres form sea level to erect wind turbine on top of the roof.
And also rain water catchment on all the roof more than 50sm/500sft.

The HDB reminded the Ngiams that even they had paid up for the flat, HDB still own the property, all they get is a paper title!

How dare they violate the Landlord's sales agreement?, and be smarter than them in harnassing the power of the SUN!, Haven't they forgotten, whos' god here?:p
