Cásate y sé Sumisa, which means 'Get Married And Be Submissive', has become a hit in the country after being published by the Archbishop of Granada.

Women's groups are considering legal action to get it banned while the Anonymous activist group have criticised the book's publication.

The book's Italian author Costanza Miriano claims it is based on the teachings of St Paul and that the ideal wife should be submissive.

One passage reads: "We [women] like humiliation because it is for a greater good."

People have taken to the streets to protest against the book in Spain where they have torn copies up of Cásate y sé Sumisa.

Social services and equalities minister Ama Mato has today called for the book to be taken off the shelves.

She said: "I have asked that the book be withdrawn. I think it is not appropriate and that it is disrespectful to women."

Online protestors Anonymous posted a video on YouTube directed at the "church" and the "government" in response to the book.

The video features a person wearing a Guy Fawkes mask addressing the camera in Spanish.

The video message said: "We don't want anyone to feel they have the right to govern our lives and bodies.

"Our bodies are our own and we can decide what to do with them."

The book is a bestseller in Italy and has shot up to number 15 on the Amazon bestseller list in Spain.

Granada's Archbishop Francisco Javier Martinez has defended the publication of the book, saying controversy surrounding it is "ridiculous".
