Majority Want Slower Pace Of Life In Singapore: Survey

SINGAPORE, Aug 26 (Bernama) -- A recent survey shows Singaporeans are generally optimistic about the future but the majority want a slower-paced life, a less competitive education system and fewer foreigners, Xinhua news agency reported citing a local media report.

The survey conducted in January as part of the Our Singapore Conversation also showed Singaporeans are even willing to trade off economic growth for the factors above, the Straits Times said.

Some 65 per cent of respondents said that they were optimistic about the future, and 78 per cent said the government was managing Singapore well.

When asked to pick among competing national priorities, respondents showed more consensus than observers expected. That consensus pointed to a desire for an easing of Singapore's pace of growth and development.

Over 60 per cent said they preferred the preservation of green spaces over infrastructural development compared to the 19 per cent who picked infrastructural growth; 53 per cent wanted the preservation of heritage spaces over infrastructural development; while only 27 per cent went the other way.

Asked to choose between career advancement and a comfortable pace of life, 59 per cent chose the latter. This number swelled to 62 per cent among those married with children.

Half of the respondents also said they wanted to reduce the intake of foreign workers even if it translated to slower growth and fewer jobs.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong recently noted a shift in the direction of nation building, saying that the government would do more to strengthen social safety net, among others.

Paulin Straughan, a sociologist at the National University of Singapore, said Singaporeans want a "more balanced approach from the government to ensure that in terms of quality of life, we are not always obsessing about saving for the future. They want everyday life to be rewarding too."

But she noted that where they stood on these compromises were a reaction to what they felt was already "in place" now.

"Because all the hard factors like infrastructure, a high job rate and a competitive education system are already in place, they are yearning for more. People can ask for more work-life balance only if you have work," she said.

All these surveys results are affected by the sample size, the manner that they were conducted and the questions that were asked. The survey may reveal more than a result and the publishers perhaps chose what they want to publish. Hence a survey result may have different interpretation by different people. But i have to agree that SPH only publish good news such as how Singapore is rated as the top destination for foreign expat and tourist etc, rarely about the happiness level of its people.

if you do not have quality of life whats the point of money? most people are so in a hurry to be debt ridden. dont they understand without debts its pretty hard to be brought down even if you dont earn much? and then they become pessimistic. well done
