Talking Student tried to scam $500k worth of NTUC vouchers [Guess which race?]

'Ridiculous' scam lands student in jail

SINGAPORE - A student came up with a "hare-brained" ploy to cheat a supermarket chain out of $500,000 in shopping vouchers by giving it a dud cheque.

Hakim Leong even rented a luxury sedan to collect them in order to "add an illusion of authenticity".

But he managed to spend only $5,000 worth of the FairPrice vouchers before the cheque bounced and he was arrested.

On Thursday, the 20-year-old was sentenced to 8˝ months behind bars over the "ridiculous and absurd" scam, which the judge said had been dreamt up "in the folly of youth".

The court heard he and an accomplice set up a company called Miraclevents in November 2011. They then ordered the $500,000 worth of shopping vouchers from NTUC through their new firm.

Leong exchanged $1,000 of them for an equal amount of CapitaMall vouchers with a victim he ensnared online.

He also cheated Modetti Office Services by issuing a dud cheque for about $700 to register Miraclevents.

But only 48 hours after he ordered the vouchers, the scheme unravelled. Leong later pleaded guilty to cheating.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Grace Lim had asked for a jail sentence of two to three years because of the scam's sophisticated planning.

However, Judge Soh Tze Bian agreed with defence counsel Lee Teck Leng that it was a "ridiculous and absurd" scheme as it was bound to unravel once the $500,000 cheque bounced.

He also agreed with Mr Lee that the National Trades Union Congress was "clearly slipshod in agreeing to accept cheque payment and releasing the vouchers before the cheque was cleared".

The judge found there was no way the pair could have escaped being caught as the cheque was from Leong's account and Miraclevents was registered under the accomplice's name.

Judge Soh said Leong suffered from "the folly of youth when he dreamt up the stupid, hare-brained scam which crumbled so quickly that he was arrested within 48 hours".

He has paid back all the money. The accomplice, identified in court papers as Tan Tuan Lue, 24, has not been dealt with.

Just for cheating NTUC, Leong could have been jailed for up to 10 years and fined up to $10,000.

    "ridiculous and absurd" scam!

And NTUC fell for this "ridiculous and absurd" scam!

    Why?

Because they got so used to seeing PAP creating the biggest and most ridiculous and absurd scam all all.
That they, PAP care for Singapore and Singaporeans.

And got themselves voted and voted and voted repeatedly to repeat their ridiculous and absurd scam on all of us
Screwing and fucking us of hundreds of billions into smear of shit on sole of shoe LKY Stinkapore sovereign funds.

I think that student will be a very good candidate as a future PAP minister
    Stinkaporeans and PAP go together
Stinkaporeans like to go head down down and arseholes up high high to be tiewed and kanned shiok shiok by PAPs and cronies
Stinkaporeans love status quo of being 4th class citizens in country stolen from them

    1. NTUC is a supermarket chain run by the government-linked and approved trade unions. Tripartism means the government stills control everything, lock, stock & barrel.
    2. They two young punks got balls, government also dare to rob.
    3. This is Singapore, you don't rob the government, the government robs you.

Accomplice of voucher cheat jailed 6 months 2 weeks

SINGAPORE: The accomplice of the student who bought S$500,000 worth of NTUC vouchers with a dishonoured cheque has been sentenced to six months and two weeks' jail.

24-year-old Tan Tuan Lue admitted to cheating NTUC Fairprice Co-operative Ltd in November 2011 of S$500,000 worth of vouchers.

He committed the offences in November 2011 with 20-year-old Hakim Leong.

Leong was sentenced to eight months and two weeks' jail in June this year.

Leong, who was a student at the time of the offence, opened a "company account" with S$500 and was issued a cheque book.

Then Leong pretended to set up a company called "Miraclevents" and asked Modetti Office Services in early November 2011 to help incorporate his firm.

In doing so, he cheated Modetti into providing office services valued at S$697.

Then in mid-November (2011), Leong approached NTUC FairPrice to buy its vouchers.

Together with Tan, he issued NTUC FairPrice a cheque, knowing they could not pay the S$500,000.

The pair went on to buy liquor and cigarettes, among other things, and resold some items for cash.

Leong also went online to exchange S$1,000 NTUC vouchers with CapitaMall vouchers of the same value.

In pleading for leniency, Tan's defence lawyer Gregory Ong said his client's culpability is lesser than that of Leong.

He indicated that Leong was the mastermind, noting that Leong had written and signed the cheques.

Tan, Mr Ong said, was not involved in this aspect.

For the cheating-related offences, Tan could have been jailed between three and 10 years and fined.

For converting the NTUC vouchers into CapitaMall vouchers, he could have been jailed a maximum of seven years and fined S$500,000. - CNA/xq
