Chef jailed 2 months, to pay penalty for receiving bribes

SINGAPORE: The former head chef of Teochew City Seafood Restaurant has been sentenced to two months' jail and ordered to pay a penalty of S$74,300.
The penalty is equivalent to the amount of bribes he received.
Tong Yu Chou, 53, admitted to receiving bribes from seafood supplier, Tay Ee Tiong, between 2006 and 2009. Tay was the sole proprietor of Wealth Seafood Product & Enterprise.
Tong would receive a cut whenever he ordered supplies from Tay.
Tong had faced 22 counts of corruption but the prosecution proceeded on five charges.
In his mitigation, Tong's lawyer said his client realises the gravity of the offences.
The lawyer said Tong felt so remorseful during investigations that he sold his four-room HDB flat to raise S$175,000 to compensate his employer.
Tong was charged in March with corruption along with four head chefs from other popular restaurants. He is the fourth to be dealt with.
The other three chefs were fined and made to pay penalties.
