The Gini coefficient is a measure of statistical dispersion most prominently used as a measure of inequality of income distribution or inequality of wealth distribution. The Gini index is the Gini coefficient expressed as a percentage.

It is defined as a ratio with values between 0 and 1: A low Gini coefficient indicates more equal income or wealth distribution, while a high Gini coefficient indicates more unequal distribution. 0 corresponds to perfect equality (everyone having exactly the same income) and 1 corresponds to perfect inequality (where one person has all the income, while everyone else has zero income).

According to the latest Human Development Report 2007/2008 published by the United Nations, Singapore has a Gini Index of 42.5 which is equivalent of a Gini Coefficient of 0.425 (I am not sure why the figures used by the UN differs from Singapore’s)

Singapore is ranked 25th in terms of Human Development Index by the United Nations. Among the top 30 countries, Singapore has the highest Gini Index and hence the greatest income gap.

In fact, Singapore’s Gini Index is closer to Third World countries like Kenya (42.5), Ghana (40.8), Turkmenistan (40. and Nicaragua (43.1) which are much further down the pecking order rather than to developed countries like Norway (25.8), Sweden (25.0), Japan (24.9) and Denmark (24.7).

Previously the MIW said the GINI index was not representative of Sinagporeans way of life. Then they said GINI index was inaccurately portrayed poorer Singaporeans wrongly. Then they said GINI index should not apply to Singapore.

So why the fuck now publish GINI index when it favours PAP? Wayang on the extreme.

They really think the peasants are soooo stupid. Time to kick PAP out.

The more they think it's smart to manipulate and spin like this, the more they will loose credibility up to a point where people will not trust anything they publish.

I'm sure Dirty Harry curse and swear at the Internet, which pry open his fist on censorship and absolute control over the media.

From what I heard fro the TV news last nite, they claim that the income of 3-roomers had increased.

Either the economy gets better (?), or those who used to draw a higher salary than than those 3-roomers of their time had moved into 3 room flat to join their less fortunate brothers, effectively raise the mean income of 3-roomers.

Have anyone known of a truth spoken by LKY and PAP ever?

LKY / PAP lied and lied to all of us time and time again.

Ever growing richer and richer as they sucked like greedy vampires on all of us.

VOTE OUT LKY AND ALL HIS CRONIES AND DOGS

SHOW YOURSELF THAT YOU GOT BALLS

KICK OUT ALL THE LKY AND CRONIES AND FRENCH CHEFS

SINGAPORE: The Consumer Price Index (CPI) in Singapore increased 6.5 per cent on-year in 2008 due mainly to higher costs of food, housing, transport and communications.

Housing costs rose 12.7 per cent, reflecting higher accommodation prices and electricity tariff while food prices advanced 7.8 per cent.

Transport and communication costs went up 3.3 per cent due to more expensive petrol and higher taxi fares, despite lower road tax and car prices.

On a year-on-year basis, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in December increased by 4.3 per cent compared to a year ago on account of higher housing and food costs.

However December’s inflation rate showed a decline with a seasonally adjusted 0.6 per cent over November, mainly due to lower costs in housing, transport and communications, which offset higher costs in food and recreation.

On a 3-month moving average basis, the consumer price index in December 2008 remained at the same level as in November 2008.

Going forward, Singapore’s Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) has revised down its forecast for the CPI in 2009, estimating inflation to either remain unchanged or to decline at 1.0 per cent.

It said on Wednesday the lower CPI is largely in expectation of a continued downward correction of commodity prices from the peaks in 2008, in line with the weakening global economy which will ease increases in domestic retail prices.

The lower 2009 CPI inflation also reflects an adjustment from the high base recorded in 2008 for food, electricity tariffs, transport and accomodation.
