Transfer window: club-by-club guide to Europe's big spenders

Monaco are ready to upset the usual power houses but new managers at Real Madrid and Bayern Munich can be expected to flash the cash during the summer

Sachin Nakrani and Paul Doyle
The Guardian Friday 31 May 2013 09.00 BST

big-spenders-composite-010.jpg

From left, clockwise: Gareth Bale, Radamel Falcao, Gonzalo Higuaín, Luis Suárez and Edin Dzeko are just some of the players being targeted by Europe's big spenders. Photograph: Guardian

Atlético Madrid

Money to spend? £50m minimum should Radamel Falcao, as expected, join Monaco. Even if some of that money is diverted to other things – such as the club's new stadium, which is scheduled to open in 2015 – funds generated from Atlético's qualification for the Champions League means the manager, Diego Simeone, is likely to retain a sizeable kitty.

Who's spending it? Simeone has established himself as an influential voice at the club, although the sporting director, José Luis Pérez Caminero, also plays a leading role when it comes to transfers.

Who they want in? A replacement for Falcao is a must. Luis Suárez has been mentioned, as has Fernando Torres, who began his career at the Vicente Calderó. The young Uruguayan defender José María Giménez has already arrived from Danubio.

Who they want out? Nobody in particular given how small the current squad is. Offers may be accepted for Raúl García and Diego Costa, however, given both players have only a year of their current contracts remaining. Sachin Nakrani

Barcelona

Money to spend? In theory, as much as the manager, Tito Vilanova, requires to rejuvenate a squad that no longer feels like the dominant force in European football. Neymar has already arrived for just over £50m and a new goalkeeper and centre-back look set to be signed.

Who's spending it? Andoni Zubizarreta, Barcelona's director of football, will work closely with Vilanova to identify key targets.

Who they want in? Neymar was this summer's marquee target and his signature has already been captured. Pepe Reina is seen as the ideal replacement for Victor Valdés, who is poised to depart from Camp Nou this summer, while Borussia Dortmund's Mats Hummels has reportedly been identified as an important defensive purchase.

Who they want out? David Villa will almost certainly be allowed to leave, particularly given he has only a year remaining on this contract. It is believed Alexis Sánchez is also available for transfer. SN

Bayern Munich

Money to spend? A little over £30m has already gone towards signing Mario Götze from Borussia Dortmund while another £50m-plus will arrive from the club's triumphant Champions League campaign. Add to that Bayern's existing wealth – Forbes values the club at over £1bn – and they could well be Europe's biggest spenders this summer.

Who's spending it? The Pep Guardiola era is about to begin but Bayern is a club with an established network of leading figures, including the president Uli Hoeness, chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and sporting director Matthias Sammer. They remain the key decision makers.

Who they want in? Robert Lewandowski is expected to join Götze in switching from Dortmund to Munich while Luis Suárez, whose agent is Pere Guardiola, Pepe's brother, has also been linked with a move to the European champions.

Who they want out? Claudio Pizarro is expected to leave when his contract expires at the end of June with other departures somewhat dependent on how Guardiola wants to shape his team. SN

Borussia Dortmund

Money to spend? The £30m acquired from Bayern Munich for Mario Götze is likely to go towards player recruitment, as will any funds received for Robert Lewandowski should he, as expected, also join the European champions. Add in the prize money Dortmund made from reaching the Champions League final and the manager, Jürgen Klopp, should have a minimum of £50m to spend this summer.

Who's spending it? Klopp is king at Dortmund having led the club to successive Bundesliga titles and the Champions League final. He will be allowed to shape the squad ahead of next season while retaining the full support of the general manager, Hans-Joachim Watzke.

Who they want in? Christian Eriksen is rumoured to be the man Klopp wants to replace Götze while Edin Dzeko has supposedly been lined-up to replace Lewandowski should the Polish striker head for the exit door. Meanwhile the centre-back Sokratis Papastathopoulos has already been signed from Werder Bremen for £8.4m

Who they want out? Felipe Santana has left to join Schalke for £880,000 while otherwise it is a case of keeping hold of key figures, such as Lewandowski, Marco Reus, Mats Hummels and Ilkay Gundogan. SN

Juventus

Money to spend? The club are in an excellent financial state and, having retained the Serie A title, are likely to have sizeable resources to strengthen an already impressive squad.

Who's spending it? The manager Antonio Conte is believed to maintain a constructive relationship with the director general, Beppe Marotta, and sporting director, Fabio Paratici.

Who they want in? Fernando Llorente will arrive on a free transfer from Athletic Bilbao with another Spain-based striker, Gonzalo Higuaín, also believed to be high on the club's wanted list.

Who they want out? Vincenzo Iaquinta and Nicolas Anelka are both certain to leave while Nicklas Bendtner returns to Arsenal following his less than fruitful loan spell. SN

Internazionale

Money to spend? Not much if Inter's managing director, Marco Fassone, is to be believed. "Our finances don't allow us to spend crazy money right now," he said recently and, with the club having failed to qualify for the Champions League, resources are likely to be tight.

Who's spending it? The new manager, Walter Mazzarri, will hold a decent amount of power given the excellent job he did at Napoli, although he will have to work alongside the technical director, Marco Branca, when it comes to transfers.

Who they want in?
Five players have already been signed for next season, among them Mauro Icardi from Sampdoria, Hugo Campagnaro from Napoli and Diego Laxalt from Defensor. Samir Nasri and Aaron Lennon are among the rumoured targets.

Who they want out? The veteran defender Walter Samuel is expected to leave, as could the club legend Javier Zanetti who, aged 39 and having just undergone an operation on a ruptured achilles tendon, has reached the end of his current deal. SN

Milan

Money to spend? Having undergone major cost cutting measures in recent seasons, Milan show a healthy balance sheet and they appear keen to spend big again this summer.

Who's spending it?
As ever, Silvio Berlusconi rules supreme alongside trusted sidekick and Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani. They are currently mulling over whether or not to retain Massimiliano Allegri as manager.

Who they want in? Christían Zapata, who spent last season on loan from Villarreal, has just been signed on a long-term deal. The Manchester City pair of Carlos Tevez and Edin Dzeko are also believed to be wanted by the club.

Who they want out? Massimo Ambrosini and Mathieu Flamini could both leave on free transfers when their contracts expire this summer. SN

Monaco

Money to spend? As much as they want. They are freshly promoted from Ligue 2 and their Russian billionaire owner wants them to make an immediate grab for a Champions League spot and maybe even the title. He will make sufficient money available.

Who's spending it? A group comprising several people, including the manager, Claudio Ranieri, sporting director, Vadim Vasilyev, and vice-president Jean-Louis Campora.

Who they want in? Having already signed João Moutinho and James Rodríguez from Porto for £60m, they are close to landing Radamel Falcao from Atlético Madrid for £51m. Ricardo Carvalho is set to join from Real Madrid on a free transfer but Monaco still want another centre-back, with Marseille's Nicolas N'Koulou top of their list. A new goalkeeper is also sought, with Barcelona's Victor Valdés or Real Madrid's Diego López among the targets.

Who they want out? No one significant. Most of the squad that won Ligue 2 will be kept. Paul Doyle

Paris Saint-Germain

Money to spend? As much as they want. The Qatari owners are determined to make PSG a Champions League force and a global brand.

Who's spending it? Much depends on how the owners react to the punishment given to Leonardo for shoving the referee after PSG's match against Valenciennes on 5 May. If the Brazilian's nine-month suspension is not deemed too long, his wish to be moved from his current post of football director to that of manager could be granted and his influence over transfers will grow even bigger, while the current manager Carlo Ancelotti will probably leave for Real Madrid. Otherwise PSG may force Ancelotti to stay and Leonardo may be shelved – or both men may leave and the club president, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, will seek both a new manager and a new sporting director.

Who they want in? The team could do with a couple of full-backs but will dedicate most of their expenditure to offensive players. At least two top strikers are sought to reduce the dependency on Zlatan Ibrahimovic, with Carlos Tevez and Wayne Rooney featuring high on the wish list. Roma's Pablo Osvaldo is considered a useful back-up option. Cristiano Ronaldo is a longstanding target but his Real Madrid team-mate, Angel Di María, is a more likely recruit.

Who they want out? The young French striker Kevin Gameiro may be allowed to leave in search of a regular starting place but the club has made it clear it will reject any attempt to sign Ibrahimovic or the centre-back Thiago Silva even if both are unhappy at the prospect of Ancelotti leaving. PD

Real Madrid

Money to spend? Hard to say until the club's presidential elections have been held on 16 June. Should Florentino Pérez retain his position, then expect another big summer splurge, especially as Real have just signed a shirt-sponsorship deal with Emirates Airline believed to be worth close to £100m over four years.

Who's spending it? Pérez will, as ever, have a say in matters but the existing president has also stated that the club legend Zinedine Zidane, who currently acts as an advisor to the board, will work directly alongside whoever the new manager is when it comes to transfers.

Who they want in? Gareth Bale appears to be the No1 target, with Zidane all but confirming that during a recent promotional event in London. Luis Suárez is also a reported target.

Who they want out? That will partly depend on the new manager, although it is fair to presume offers would be considered for, among others, Marcelo, Kaká and Pepe. Ricardo Carvalho has already left for Monaco. SN
