Re: Guys from the Navy - What are the Differences between Frigate, Corvette, Destroye
in terms of tonnage, corvette is smallest of the 3, followed by frigate and destroyer in ascending order. corvette can be 1000 to 2000 tonnes, while a frigate can be from 1000+ to 4000 tonnes, and a destroyer (in the us navy) is typically 4000 to 7000+ tonnes. although tonnage does not truly determine definition and class, the size and mass of each type are critical in supporting the mission categories each type is intended for.
for example, a corvette is typically meant for light specialized missions, such as either anti-sub (asw corvette) or anti-air (missile corvette) seldom anti-surface or anti-ship. it can also be used for coastal and escort missions of non-capital ships. the intoduction of the littoral combat ships (lcs) has rendered the corvette semi-irrelevant for coastal missions. however, it is still used for near-shore missions as lcs is not deployed widely. essentially, it is not as multi-purpose and longer range than the frigate and destroyer.
the frigate is bigger and can hold more weapon systems than the corvette. it is primarily used for amphibious support, merchant or cargo shipping escort and screening of larger slower ships. sometimes they are used as frigate screens for the fleet, such as a carrier battle group. but they are limited with weapon systems, range and firepower of weapons compared to the destroyer. more frigates are becoming multi-role, multi-purpose defensive ships, and some asw frigates are now capable of anti-air missions too.
the destroyer is the true blue ocean small fleet combatant that has both offensive and defensive capabilities. it is also the fastest fleet or cbg screener that is multi-role and multi-purpose in many naval combat situations. sort of like the handy jack of all trades in the navy toolbox. the one mission it cannot do is act like an aircraft carrier. some classes of destroyers are becoming larger yet faster that they may render the cruiser obsolete. the operational range and time spent at sea are longer than those of frigates.
