Why casino giant Melco chose PH as its second home

MANILA, Philippines (16 Mar) – It is no secret that Manila is currently in the gaming spotlight as it gears up for more casino openings in the next few years. And despite the church opposition and graft controversies surrounding the local gaming industry, analysts maintain that the Philippines is set to be the next gaming hub alongside Las Vegas, Singapore, or even the world’s top destination, Macau.

While some credit Manila’s location as the reason why it can attract high-rollers, Macau’s casino giant Melco Crown Entertainment Ltd. said the domestic consumption pattern in the country will also help buoy the local gaming industry.

“We think the Philippines is one of the fastest growing and exciting countries around,” Lawrence Ho, co-chairman at Melco, said during a briefing in Makati City.

“Given the consumption patterns that I see, this is definitely a city where the people love to enjoy and live life,” he added.

Ho’s firm on Friday just formalized an agreement with local firm Belle Corp. of the SM Group for the construction and development of Belle Grande Manila Bay which is expected to start operations mid-next year.

Belle Grande will be the second integrated casino resort to open in PAGCOR’s Entertainment City in Parañaque City. Port magnate Enrique Razon’s Solaire Resort and Casino opened March 16.

Ho said that Belle Grande, together with Solaire and Resorts World Manila, which opened in 2009 in Pasay City, and other casinos set to open soon will help develop the country’s gaming sector.

“We think the market, with new supply… will grow quite significantly. Analysts are looking at $3 billion in gaming revenues by 2015… and the Philippines in five or six years time can be the size of Las Vegas or Singapore which is around $6 billion,” Ho said.

Aside from Solaire and Belle Grande, two more billion-dollar integrated casino resorts are set to open in Entertainment City: Japanese pachinko tycoon Kazuo Okada’s $2 billion casino and a joint venture project between Genting Hong Kong Ltd. and Alliance Global Group.

Are there vice activities in the casions in pinoyland?

If yes, then SG will face real competition.. most pretti pinoys are in their own countryland.. so if you go to their casions, chances are higher to get those more pretty pinoys.

Out pappies say they encourage competition, let's see what they do when punters flock over to pinoyland.

The problem is there aren't many casinos which close down. The only ones I know are old crummy ones in the ultra competitive las vegas strip. There is only one case I've read where a casino in north africa had to close shop due to social pressure -- exerted by an islamic body that was gaining political power.

When less tourists comie, Mbs and Rws would simply pressure the Pap to allow them to court more local customers. Casinos are simply cancerous tumours which will bring this country to ruin. And all thanks to PM Lee's government for building 2 mega casinos here during his watch!

If you have one screw loose in your head, Pinoyland casino is the place to visit. We went to a casino in Cebu city, it was in the afternoon and we were the only customers. outside casino its no man's land. Friend kena robbed and stabbed. You don't find this kind of shit in Macau. As for Singapore, maybe our wish come through, one of our jets malfunction during NDP flypast, eject seat while the plane spin out of control into MBS or Istana, who cares anyway.

Imo, the serious gamblers, which includes the big boys are there to gamble as first and for some, ONLY objective. Some gamblers are known to 'siam' bonking during their gambling trips, for superstitious reason. So, Pinoy gals aren't the attraction.

I opine Macau will not be threatened. Their 'infrastructure' is already so well-entrenched. The underworld will ensure it is safe to gamble in Macau. Can't say the same for Pinoyland though.

Boo hoo, so suppose Pinoyland siphons away a little casino business away from Singapore. What's that got to do with me and you. Do you own MBS or RWS shares? Does the GDP from the casinos contribute in any way to ordinary Singaporeans?

No doubt, Casino is a "sure win" business.
However, Casino is not a "sure profitable" business.

The operating expenses of running a Casino (excluding hotel rooms) alone can be very costly.
They need to provide the kind of "conducive environment" to lure the crowd into their gambling den.
Or else it's just a matter of time for the operators to start bleeding.

No doubt. The gaming industry has been growing due to the boom in Asia over the past 2 decades. And now that US and Euro economies have tanked, if the China bubble bursts, market consolidation will be inevitable. The problem is RWS and MBS are run by the 2 biggest players. It's likely the smaller players will fold before Sands and Genting do.

What if one fine day the Thailand government also give the go ahead to build their casino?
You can bet many tourists will be lured away from Sillypore. RWS and MBS will no longer be that attractive anymore as beside gambling, what other
"activities and service" can they provide in Sillypore as compared to Thailand?

then Pap will just officially set up legal bordellos like Germany's FKK or Melbourne's The Daily Planet. That one's even listed on the stock exchange.

But unlike the casinos, Pap will keep its promise to reserve employment for sinkies only.
