I am considering to visit a relative in Hull, UK this summer. And I hope to stop over to London, Manchester and Amsterdam.

Anyone been to these places, and can recommend interesting things/ places? I know amsterdam, i must visit their "geylang". Yah?

Also thinking if I should pop over to Paris for a few days?

Thanks for all whom reply.

Manchester, what do you intend to do there, visit Old Trafford?

Amsterdam is fine, the red-light district/rossebuurt is not tame like "geylang" for sure but it is worth visitng for its legends - mostly true according to one local guide. But of course, there are harmless things going on there. During the day, tourists admire at the narrow streets, architectures, river, etc

If you visit the Rossebuurt, just be careful not to take photos of the "occupied" windows.

Watch out for pickpockets and annoying people who want to sell you drugs or try to be funny/racist or try to chat with you.

Usually, have someone with you, if you do not want trouble. I mixed myself into a group of Jap tourists the last time someone followed me after making run of me racially. That guy is high and unpredictable, no use talking sense or all the police. Moreover, I was just passing through to get to Centraal.

If you want variety, visit Paris.
You take take the bullet train on the London-Amsterdam-Paris circuit.

Summer is a good time to visit, and to look at women in summer clothings

Manchester's weather not exactly visitor friendly (wet). If Old Trafford, take the short light train ride from town. Beware there are 2 OTs -walk beyond the 1st (cricket grounds). For inter-city bus or train, buy return -way cheaper than 1 way.

Neddy, thanks for the reply. Yes, I did thought of visiting old trafford. But other than that, nothing much in manchester rite?

Also, why no photos of the "occupied" windows? I thought they are all dress up?

Didnt know there is a bullet train for all 3 cities. Maybe I should pop by paris too.

Take a day trip to visit Shakespeare's birthplace... Stratford-Upon-Avon...

Stratford-upon-Avon is steeped in the history of its most famous resident, William Shakespeare. This Warwickshire country town contains the home where Shakespeare was born, the cottage where Anne Hathaway resided before their marriage and the church where the couple is buried...

This is a very beautiful and quiet town....MUST VISIT!!!

I agree neddy...this Versailles is simply obscenely opulent....replenished with the wealth of the royalty.....and all ended in tragedy!!!
One of the world's treasured museum - MUST SEE!!!

The magnificent Château de Versailles is a testimony of the Sun King's extravaganza. The Palace and its magnificent formal garden became the quintessential model for palaces in Europe.

You may offend them and they close curtains/move behind "stage". Others may follow. Nothing left to see.

I made a mistake, the Eurostar only use bullet train as far as Brussels, then it is a TGV bullet train to Amsterdam. Or you can take a ferry crossing (eg P&O Ferry) from Hull to Rotterdam. It is like a mini cruise with movie theatre, casino, live shows and good rest place. An experience in itself. You can bring your car up the ferry, but continent drive on the wrong side, be careful when taking the roundabout on arrival at rotterdam. Also speed change from mph to km/h.

From Amsterdam to Paris Gare de Nord is the TGV

Can't tell you much about Manchester, the last time I was there, UMIST still exist.

The French are still talking about the REVOLUTION today.

This is one museum I will not miss if I am in Paris. Tourists are known to spend days here.

if you have more time in the uk, try hampshire downs or south downs in the hampshire, sussex region. stay in centuries old english inns or mansions turned into hotels in the cuntry side. at least you are served by english locals, not some ah nehs, pakis or afros who dominate, depreciate and defecate the cities.

My recommendation is to cover the Greater London including Winsor, Stratford upon Avon to see Shakepeare's house + watch a play in his hometown, and either one of the 2 university towns ie Oxford or Cambridge. I find it a waste of time to visit Scotland, as well as the other extreme at Land's End. To experience small town flavour you can try Brighton as well.

Cotsworlds part of UK is recommended. London's very cosmopolitan, and it's not really England -with many enclaves of mid east blokes, ah nehs and of course Soho. Never so evident on the tube.

thanks! never been to cotswold. rolling hills and little sleepy villages are really inviting. it's like the last refuge of the english. untouched by london and globalization. a must for me on next uk trip.

If you can, take a bus or drive to The Lake District...simply beautiful...and the small town of Keswick on Derwentwater.....peaceful,serene and very English with very nice and polite residents...I love the ice cream!!!

The popular town of Keswick on Derwentwater is located just off the A66, about 20 miles from the M6 J40, in the North Lakes area of the Lake District National Park. It is a small bustling place of around 5,000 inhabitants, with variety of shops, galleries, restaurants, pubs and cafés centred around a pedestrianised Market Square. Keswick has a large number of outdoor activity and clothing shops, as befits the town's new title of "The adventure capital of England".
