3 hawker centres to close for upgrading works

SINGAPORE: Three hawker centres will be closed for upgrading works from 1 March, under the National Environment Agency's (NEA's) Hawker Centres Upgrading Programme.

They are at Block 6, Tanjong Pagar Plaza; Block 44, Holland Drive; and Block 112, Jalan Bukit Merah.

The upgrading works for the centre at Tanjong Pagar Plaza will take one year.

That of Holland Drive will take 10 months, while the works for the centre at Jalan Bukit Merah will last nine months.

Eight market stallholders of the centre at Tanjong Pagar Plaza have decided to come together to set up a small temporary market nearby to serve their regular patrons in the mornings.

The NEA will help them set up this market.

The stallholders of the other two centres have chosen not to build any temporary markets during the upgrading.

After the centres have been upgraded, they will have more chairs and tables, while all cooked food stalls will be equipped with new mechanical exhaust systems to improve ventilation.

It is telling you the price in this hawker centre is higher by the time it is upgraded.

I wonder whether there are hawker centre downgrade which will give us cheaper dish?

Shame. Not only they deprive these hawkers of their source of income, the residents are offered no alternatives.

What has happend to the arrangement of having an alternative temporary market rejected?

Must be the incense amount of greed that NEA and their contractors are demanding, that the hawkers thinks it's better off staying off with no income. :rolleyes:

Base on what I know from Bedok South hawker centre upgrade, to have the temp stall set up, hawkers need to pay $15,000 upfront to start erecting the temp shelter. (say 50 hawkers, this will be $750k just to have the tent built).

After that, it's $1500 per month to rent the space, before adding other expenses.

For 10 months, it's $3000 per month before other costs.

More and more hawkers choose not to participate in the scam. They are pissing off more and more peasants.

whats even better is that they can only use the so called "approved" contractors to build these shelters so these so called "approved contractors" are none other than the very bastards who sit in the boards and CCs etc etc PAP running dogs committees who "decided" on the "need" for an upgrade!!! These self serving bastards are ripping people off left right and centre!!!!

this is one of the biggest scams run by PAP and their minions.... they liuterally take control of the way decision are being made and then make such decisions to benefit themselves...this si a fucking scandal waiting to be exposed and it is gonna be as dirty and entangled as the fucking AIM scam!!!!

It's not just hawker centres, HDB does it too with its upgrading programs. You'll have to fork out money for those 'upgrades'.

Before 2011 GE, the aljunied town council wasted a lot of money to renovate the kovan hawker centre although the condition was still quite good. Tis is tip of ice berg of the gravy train going around town council mismanagement.

reminds me of the Phua Chu Teng aka Pasar Makan at Bedok Reservoir back in 2006, make the market place a Phua Chu Teng end up having to re-renovate the roof with additional blinds to keep away the rain...

Of course it's given to their own kakis, and they also stretch the project into 10 month to 1 year time. With this duration, I can build a whole new 10 storey building. This renovation has no structural changes, only re-surface, wire, plumbing and new exhaust and ventilation. Why takes so long and inconvenient the residents ?
