National University of Singapore sociologist Daniel Goh made his maiden speech at an election rally last night, formally announcing that he is a Workers’ Party member.

A well-known commentator on issues of race and religion in Singapore, Dr Goh revealed that he joined the party this month.

He was one of four new high profile faces rolled out by the party at its Punggol East by-election campaign rallies. The others are two lawyers and an engineer.

Dr Goh, 39, said he was introduced to the WP by a friend, which eventually led to him volunteering with the party after the General Election in 2011 and helping Aljunied GRC MP Chen Show Mao at his Meet-the-People Sessions in the Paya Lebar ward.

In his speech, Dr Goh, an associate professor of sociology at NUS, said that his friends wondered about his motives and told him to join the People’s Action Party (PAP) instead to “change things from the inside”.

But it was not about whether one pursues change from the inside or the outside, but that change “comes from the correct side”, said Dr Goh, who is married with a seven month old son.

Asked later if he planned to run in the next General Election, he declined to comment.

The other three new faces are Mr Terence Tan, 41, a lawyer at Dodwell and Co; Mr Dennis Tan, 42, partner at law firm DennisMathiew; and Mr Redzwan Hafidz Abdul Razak, 28, an engineer.

All started volunteering with the party after the 2011 GE, when WP became the first opposition party to win a GRC.

They are now members, and each made speeches at the three rallies since last Saturday covering issues related to transport, healthcare and housing.

Both the lawyers have been helping Aljunied GRC MP Muhamad Faisal Abdul Manap at his Kaki Bukit MPS, and Mr Redzwan is helping at WP chairman Sylvia Lim’s Serangoon ward.

Hopefully, these four honourable individuals will be able to persuade and attract more patriotic individuals to join The Workers' Party.
There is hope for a brighter future in Singapore.

It is hard to change things from inside, incl. PAP. How many Change agents are sidestepped and dropped from established organisations.

It is also better to join a rising star than a sinking ship, esp one that has external Change forced into them.
