The fact of the matter is this. Our education system is not too bad. There is much room for improvement and our students are turning out to be robots but some committing suicide but overall still not too bad.

Congratulations to the Singaporean students.
Hopefully, in the forthcoming decades, one or more of you will win a Nobel Prize in Mathematics, or Physics, or Chemistry.

Those things don't bring food to the table.

We only eat 3 meals a day. That is so much joy food can bring. Too much food yields negative utility.

Kids with kind considerations, manners and compassion bring joy every minute of the day. No negative utility ever felt for kind considerations, manners and compassion.

English speaking Australia ranks behind SG in reading. Pathetic.

I find that hard to believe.

Judging by our children in Toronto, I believe that they read better than my classmates and I, at that age.

My youngest child read as though he is 2 to 3 grades higher.

Acutally I find this part hard to understand -that of reading in Singapore. If this statement is true, how come the major bookstores in Singapore closed down? The only succesful bookstore chain in Singapore is Popular - for selling lots of stationary and ten-year series (for rote-learners) than novels and literary works. Looking around (especailly at airport lounges, wating terminals), the ones reading paperbcks are almost always caucasians. Singaporeans tend to be more fiddling with their hand-held IT gadgets than pouring through books. Whilst I notice a fair number of Singaporeans appreciating literature, attending plays and so on, the majority are sucked into flimsy stuff like K-pop, especially the younger ones.

My observation.

Cheers!

Those things don't bring food to the table.

Over a generation ago, this nation has overcome that stage of development (to fill the tummy) and is looking further (eg. a gracious society). If we're still thinking of bringing food to the table, we're overeating.

Cheers!

English cannot swim? Then all the more you should be reading. Novels aren't the only genre. There are also non-fiction categories like history, politics, philosophy, religion, economics, current-affairs, autobiographies, war, socialism, comedy. The list goes on. Reading is a good habit and excellent past time. I can spend the whole day with a good book by the poolside, in bed, on a bus/train. Best part is - it doesn't cost much.

Cheers!
