A polytechnic student who punched a Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) paramedic has been handed a 15 months' probation.

Abdul Rahman Bamadhaj Abas, 19, who was on probation for theft at the time of the offences, was found guilty of disorderly behaviour and hurting a public servant.

Another charge of voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant was taken into consideration.

The court also ordered Abdul Rahman to perform 100 hours of community service and to remain at home between 10pm and 6am daily.

In addition, his parents have to provide a $5,000 bond to ensure his good behaviour during his probation.

Abdul Rahman punched Mohd Chan Herman, an SCDF paramedic who tried to help him, on August 25 at about 6.30pm this year.

Mr Mohd Chan, who was sent to attend to a case in Hindoo Road, found Abdul Rahman lying at a void deck in Veerasamy Road.

Abdul Rahman's arms were bleeding and he smelled of alcohol.

Mr Mohd Chan dressed Abdul Rahman's wounds, and with the help of a police officer, buckled him onto a stretcher.

But Abdul Rahman tried to get off the stretcher and started pushing people in the process. He later freed himself and punched Mr Mohd Chan in the eye.

The police officer restrained Abdul Rahman's wrists with a cable tie, and helped him into an ambulance.

But Abdul Rahman broke free and dashed out of the ambulance, shouting repeatedly.

During mitigation, Abdul Rahman said he was remorseful and that he was too drunk to remember what he had done.

But District Judge Ng Peng Hong told Abdul Rahman that he was testing the court's limits by committing offences while on probation.

The judge, who said it was the court's responsibility to ensure such cases do not happen to other public servants, then placed Abdul Rahman on remand.

Very, very lenient. While on probation, another 3 charges and yet probation again. VCH to public servant is a serious offence during my time. Sure masuk.
