Singapore invaded by the Japanese in Feb 1942

Another National Day but this one is different. It took me all these years to unlearn that National Day is not our country’s birthday (see LINK) but our Independence Day and then my own reflection of how our forefathers fought for it, first from the Japanese, then the British and finally our separation from Malaysia. Singaporeans who lived during this time period would consider the Japanese occupation period as the worst times of their life.

During the Japanese occupation, almost all Singaporeans were anti-Japanese (if the country were occupied by various foreign forces, Singaporeans would have been anti-foreigner or what some term as xenophobia). The people were anti-Japanese because the Japanese came to rob them of their possessions, livelihood and they live in constant fear where their next meal would come from.

There was a small group of people who were delighted that the Japanese came as they had dealing with the Japanese and benefited personally from such association. Singaporeans called these people TRAITORS. The Japanese and the traitors live a wonderful life during this time at the expense of the majority of Singaporeans. Then, there was a small group of Singaporeans who were the resistance fighters. They risked their lives and the lives of their family to fight the Japanese. They were the Patriots, the true Heroes of Singapore. At the end of the Japanese occupation, the traitors were executed or jailed.

Today in Singapore, when you voice your opinion against the government’s foreign workers policy, you are branded as xenophobic. It is a way to shut you up using a fancy word. Talk to your grandparents who lived during the Japanese occupation and ask them why the dislike the Japanese so much and then ask yourself why our forefathers have to make the sacrifices for our generation to make the same mistake again.

Some people argue that the difference today is that these foreigners did not invade Singapore but was invited by our government. It may seem like a valid point but murder is murder regardless whether the victim agreed to be murdered or not (The Queen versus Dudley and Stevens, 29:30 onwards – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBdfcR-8hEY). As an analogy, suppose one day, 3 robbers came into your office whilst you and your colleagues were in the office, I am sure that you will do all you can to prevent the robbery. In the second scenario, these same 3 robbers came but this time at the invitation of your office manager; you will still try to stop them from robbing your company and after that sack the office manager and replace him.

Just because the lower educated, the underprivileged and others were unable to stop the government from implementing such a poor policy which benefits only a select group of people, does not make it right for the large number of foreigners who have come to rob us and our children of a decent livelihood a home, a tertiary place etc.

Justice requires us to level the playing field for those who are underprivileged. That is why in horse racing, extra weights are put on better horses to even out the odds (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090510182048AAEyP50). Putting more weight on the underprivileged and less weight on the affluent is INJUSTICE unless of course you think that putting any of our Ministers in the boxing ring against Mohammed Ali is fair.

So during this National Day, with your hand on your heart, ask yourself what did our forefathers fight for and what does it truly mean to be an independent and democratic country. Do not confuse the traitors with the heroes and vice versa. Happy National Day!

While the name LIM Bo Seng epitomize the lot of brave Singaporeans, who organised themselves as resistance fighters against the Japanese invaders, a younger LKY was helping out as an English language interpreter and helping the Japanese to understand the English newspapers reports.
Sixty-eight years after the Japanese Occupation in Singapore, the PAP under the tutelage of its Mentor, will now want Singaporean to help the PAP to integrate a deliberate massive inflow of PRC Citizens to be Singaporean Citizens.
Todate, the PAP has allowed so many foreigners to have Singapore Citizenships that they now amount to ONE-THIRD of the total Singapore Population.
Why is the PAP now embracing PRC Citizens to be Singapore Citizens, when it is common knowledge that many PRC Citizens are also members of the Chinese Communist Party in order to progress in China ?
Whatever happened to the PAP xenophobia towards Singaporeans whom they accused to be “Communists” in the 1960s, and then “Marxist plotters” in the 1980s – all of whom were incarcerated by the PAP abusing the Internal Security Act and locked up from between 1 to 32 years without trial, and released without any liberty or an apology ?
Singaporeans should wake up to the duplicity of the PAP self-serving policies before we are further disenfranchised in our own homeland.
Singaporeans can yet live a better life and have 4 kids again – without the PAP in government.

I notice for several weeks already, a group of about 8 india indian uncles have been gathering at a neighborhood park sitting on the benches together talking away. next to these is another group of uncles who are chinese singaporeans.
Sitting at close proximity, the 2 groups do not speak to one another and appears to show they ignore the other group. They each speak their own languages.
I see that the india indians are crowding out the chinese uncles who , i can hear them saying, a few singaporeans and so many indians.
They are flabbergasted.
There is a real problem already existing and waiting to explode.
This group of india indian uncles are old and do not seem to be working or contributing to economy. Why are so many of these here crowding our elders who built this nation?
It appears to me that these indians are trying to show dominance.
Where is my cheese?

@ Emeritus Singaporean….Well said…
For those that saw all the three events, including all the riots in the 50s n 60s would detest the Japanese for their ill-treatment of our citizens. They ruled by fear. They chopped off Singaporean heads and hung them around Dhoby Ghaut for all to look at the utter animal cruelty of the Japanese. They did it with glee like all the other cruel acts. Ask your grand parents who need to be around 79 yrs old or above to really have lived and know these events.
That was war and they came to conquer and plunder. We hated them enough to kill them without compunction.
The foreigners that are coming now also comes with the idea of taking n in a way plundering also. The only difference is that this time they are plundering with the connivance of the government, inadvertently or otherwise. There were traitors then, there are similarly traitors now.

Hi @Lee Kee Chia’
You are spot on in your observation about the massive influx of elderly uncles and aunties from India on Long Term Pass or Dependence Pass. There are huge in numbers. The consequences for Singaporeans?
A. They dont work but hang around enjoying the fruits of our labour and they are not economically active in contributing to our economic growth. The son or daughter gets an S Pass. The son brings his family of wife and kids as dependents. Next the MOM is giving a circumvented work permit to the spouse known as Letter Of Consent or LOC to work in Singapore! See how the Work Permit loophole is circumvented. The husband manages to get a job for the wife in Sporethrough the thousands of Indians employed in the many fields in Spore.
It is universal knowledge that India is highly corrupted with lots of “Blak Money” these uncles and aunties have in India.
B. Think of the strain on our health services i.e Polyclinics, Hospitals when these oldies easily fall ill! As if we dont have our own elderly to take care of! Infrastructure overload? What about infrastructure overload? Freeloader!
C. The government has always said we need to ensure the youger gen.are not unnecessarily burdened by too many older citizens in future. But that is happening NOW with the 20,000 New Citizens bringing in thier parents into Spore and the 500,000 PRs also doing like wise! But we were only talking of the S Pass initially.
Govt shd. checkout this mammoth elderly foreign populace!
