Ministry of Social and Family Development's immediate priorities

SINGAPORE: The new Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) will re-examine public policies which aim to get Singaporeans to marry and have their first child earlier.
Acting Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports Chan Chun Sing, highlighted this as an immediate priority for the new ministry.
Mr Chan will helm MSF as Acting Minister when it is established on November 1.
He told the media on Thursday that many young people face challenges in forming a family, while those who are married face challenges in bringing up their children.
Mr Chan said the family is a core institution of society and the government will look at the policies holistically, together with the National Population and Talent Division and other agencies to tackle the issues.
The acting minister, who was speaking to reporters during a visit to the Asian Women's Welfare Association, said another priority is to strengthen the social safety net, especially for those who are at-risk.
Mr Chan said the new ministry will look into ways to better help those in need.
He said his priority over the next three months is to make sure that the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports continues to provide all the services that it is responsible for, as well as prepare for a successful transition.
Mr Chan, who is also Chairman of the National Youth Council, said he will hand over the chairmanship of the youth agency to Mr Lawrence Wong.
Mr Lawrence Wong will helm the new Ministry for Culture, Community and Youth as Acting Minister when it is established on November 1.
