May 2011

Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan had announced in Parliament last Friday that Jurong General Hospital would be renamed Ng Teng Fong Hospital, after the family of the late property tycoon donated $125 million to the hospital.

Slated to open in 2014, the hospital is fully funded by the Government but private donations provide additional assistance to needy patients, among other services.

The name change prompted our reader Andy Lim to write in to The Straits Times Forum earlier this week, asking if it was appropriate to name a public hospital after its largest donor, and proposing that the hospital be renamed after the man credited with the transformation of Jurong - Dr Goh Keng Swee - instead.

Once upon a time, in the not-too-distant past, Jurong East was a nice little town, not too overcrowded and pleasant to spend a weekend at.

Before Giant, IMM's anchor tenant was a Japanese hypermart, where you need a paid membership card to purchase anything.

The Jurong library looked more like a library than a suburb mall wannabe.

From the MRT station platform, you could have an unobstructed view of IMM. If you're adventurous, you could trek through the green fields and make your way to IMM. During evening time, the bats would come out and nest on the trees.

Jurong Entertainment Centre had a bowling alley, something which J-Cube, its successor, does not.

It's all going away now. Besides the NTF mega hospital, there's two more malls: JEM and Big Box.
