Two years ago, my mother became one of the 24,000 or more elderly Britons annually who have to sell their house to finance residential care.
I don’t mind about what would have been my inheritance evaporating in this way. Nor does my brother. It is what our late father would have wanted.
That said, the current system — thanks to means testing, which means those with assets of less than £23,000 enjoy free care — is skewed in favour of those who choose, for example, to drink and smoke away their income without saving.
They know the state will give them a very basic standard of care should they need it.
Responsible people, meanwhile, who have saved all their lives must sacrifice their homes to be cared for.
What I do mind — very much — is that the Government still has no sensible strategy to ensure all elderly people can live in safety and dignity
