SINGAPORE - Former president S R Nathan received an Honorary Doctor of Letters from Chancellor Tony Tan Keng Yam of National University of Singapore (NUS) on Thursday, July 5.

NUS president Tan Chorh Chuan honoured Mr Nathan in his commencement speech to 260 graduates for his 'dedication to service' as the country's longest serving president and for being a top civil servant, reported The Straits Times.

The former president was among 260 graduates at the commencement ceremony. He had graduated in 1954 with a diploma in social work from the University of Malaya, before it became NUS.

Mr Tan also announced that the university will start a professorship in social work named after Mr Nathan.

The former president of the Republic then addressed the crowd of 1,000 graduating students, parents and NUS staff, urging graduates to be mindful of history to make sense of the future.

Over 9,000 students will be graduating from NUS in 22 ceremonies in the next two weeks.

What is so special about Phd? can any tom dick and harry easily get it. I heard it takes nearly half your lifetime to be student to get it.

Prataman's contribution to Singapore is one of a servant that dutifully served the Kempetei during their heinous rule over Singapore. This prataman even has the audacity to claim that he worked for the Japanese civilian police when facts are clear that Japanese police in ocupied lands were all military. The government was military in nature and the police were military in nature.

The sad part is that this useless prick got paid at least $30million during his time as a president. He learned the Japanese language sufficiently to work for the kempetei but he could not fulfill his promise to learn Mandarin. This was a promise he made at the start of his second tenure as president. I am hopeful that history will be truthful to the achievements of this debacle of a man. :eek:

Key word is honorary doctorate. It is of zero academic value. Any rich or well-connected dumb motherfucker can get an honorary degree from any institution who's willing to sell one.

Prata man attended so many free makan functions when he was the President of Spore.. He also helped cooked free Briyanis for a Mosque Charity event back then.. NUS should give him a Honorary Doctorial Degree in Culinary Arts..

Good idea too.. A Honorary Doctorial Degree in Prata making is a befitting way to honour a fat Ex President who did practically nothin during his term in office except to eat, cut ribbons and attend charity events..
