North Korea is facing a severe drought that may worsen the country's already dire food situation.

State-run media reported on Saturday that the country is suffering from a widespread drought. It
said the rainfall in May in western parts of the country was the lowest in 50 years. The media said
authorities are rushing to build or repair irrigation facilities across the country. However, the drought
may affect hundreds of thousands of hectares of farmland because not much rain is in the forecast.

North Korea is said to need an additional one million tons of food for its citizens annually.

The country's leader Kim Jong Un has called the food shortage the country's most pressing issue.
He
has repeatedly promised to address the problem. But the situation may worsen if the drought continues.
