16 years' jail, caning for drug trafficking set aside on appeal

A computer repairman had his conviction and sentence for drug trafficking set aside upon appeal, as the High Court had doubts about the testimony of the key prosecution witness.

Chong Cheong Seng, 50, will not have to serve the 16-year jail term or receive the 10 strokes of the cane imposed by the district court.

However, he has to continue to serve his three-year jail term for possession and consumption of methamphetamine, commonly known as Ice. He did not appeal these convictions.

Last Friday, Justice Philip Pillai acquitted Chong of trafficking in 9.6g of diamorphine - the medical name for heroin - after deciding that the testimony of Low Chiew Wah was not sufficiently convincing to find Chong guilty.
