Man locks himself in car and revs until car catches fire

A man who seemed drunk fell asleep in his car at an Yishun carpark in broad daylight.

All would have been fine except that the man kept his foot on his accelerator -- whether on purpose or not -- until his car's exhaust pipe caught fire, citizen journalism website Stomp reported.

The incident happened on Jan 8 at about 1pm. A reader who witnessed the incident told Stomp the man, in his mid-20s, was continuously stepping on the accelerator of his stationary car for a good 20 minutes.

The reader told Stomp the man was lying down and using his cellphone.

The police was notified and reached the scene quickly with a team from the Singapore Civil Defence Force.

The man had refused to open the door but changed his mind quickly when a police officer took out his baton, the reader said.

The reader overheard the man claiming that he fell asleep in the car.

A police spokesman said the man was conveyed to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital for a medical examination.
