Parking Charges In Hospitals Atrociously High - Bad For Hospital's Health.

Visit any hospital's A&E Dept, Specialists Clinics and other departments and you as a driver will end up coughing out "parking charges". This doen not come cheap and is close to what Changi Airport charges people. It is atrocious!!.
I don't seem to understand the logic behind these hefty amount, as many people go to A&E due to emergency and hospital's specialist clinics for follow-up medical check-ups. The latter dates (specialists clinics) are allocated by the hospital. In my opinion, this is unfair as the patient has already spent so much on an operation and SHOULD not be made to pay for all these car-parking charges. Given a date for follow-up means an "invitation" from the hospital, which further means that the person ought to be treated like a guest and hence excused from paying parking charges. The least the hospital can do is to have a system that any pateint driving for A&E and follow up checks can be given a coupon to exit free of charge. This is what many hotels and shopping centres do. What happens when a patient who drives to hospital is admitted? The parking charges will accumulate. I am sure many patients have gone through this experience, especially those who are alone.
A 4 hour wait at an A&E can cost the patient up to $10/- in parking fees not forgetting that the patient (or rather the cient) has already forked out a sum of $95/ for registration. The cost of X-rays and medications have not been factored in yet. Some hospitals even have "valet" service and the signs always state that "all lots are full". The valet "automatically" has to be utilised. Although, the service of the valet is free but more often than not, out of goodwill, the driver will give these poor valets some money to "lim-kopi or chiak png". Otherwise, "pai-seh".
Please give your feedback as to how and what hospitals should do to make it easier for follow-up patients (the hospitals clients). The charging of parking fees will also mean that people may not want to help others in emergencies by bringing them to the hospitals for treatment.

Due to the congestion at the hospital car parks, we will be imposing peak hours surcharges of 35% to deter casual parking & to give our patients better service. Motorist can redeem the parking fees up to $10 for a discount on their medical fees, when they next visit the hospital. Thank you for allowing to serve you better.

To serve our patients better, the specialist fees will now incorporate the parking fees. Accordingly the new fees will now be $125. Our patients will now no longer need to be concerned about their parked cars and wait times which may be up to 3 years. We would like thank our patients for their suggestions that led to the consolidating of the fees.

I refer to the recent consolidation of parking fees into the specialist charges. I visit a cardiologist and my wait is seldom more than an hour. I don't see how the fee consolidation is fair to me. I also wonder about those who take public transport because they are unable to afford a car or are doing their part in reducing the car population in what is clearly a tiny island.

After they have raised all the subsiDIzEd charges so affordably high, you won't be consulting your cardiologist, who maybe issuing you a certificate to consult an Embalmer & an undertaker.

I don't own a car but I have seen the recent comments about the hospital parking fees. Clearly we have an issue. Do we find every opportunity to milk our citizens in the name capitalism. Is that the reason we sent our best and brightest to Oxbridge and Ivy League. Surely not. The expectation is that they are able to discern and distill issues and crystallise policies that serves the country and it's citizens in a respectable, caring and fair manner.

It's obvious that the State is doing comfortably well financially. How else can we afford to pay our politicians well above World standard. The same goes for our civil service and government listed companies. Let's not forget that in that wash, there are people who are less capable, people who no longer can afford to pay the "market" rates because they are no longer in the workforce. Many of whom help build modern Singapore.

A hospital visit is not an "income opportunity". I am sure our policy wonks during their formative years Including their post graduate phases in various western insititutions would have heard of concessions for the elderly, retired and the redemption of parking coupons. I am sure no one in his right mind equates a visit to a hospital for treatment to that of a visit to Kranji races.

Don't give them any ideas, they might even consolidate the fees for that as well plus thrown in a coffin offer as a cross sell.

I visited several hospital before my surgery, all of them charges parking fees or some kind. However, if you are patient, they allow your parking ticket to be validated, essentially free of charge. The parking fees are imposed so that there is enough car park spots to allow patients to have needed parking space.

Nice thread as parking, food courts and restaurants abound in hospitals to cater to the wealthy. The poor has to find places to eat or bring their own food as the prices there are atrocious.

I think carpark charges should be standardized island wide: malls, hospitals, offices, hotels, flats, condos.

Drivers will always want to park at the carpark closest to their destination, and which has the most number of vacant lots.

Do it something like this:

$2.80(+X)/hr, flat rate for entire day and throughout the night. Same rate for weekends and public holidays.

X = (N / available no. of empty lots)

N = variable that depends on commercial property value.

E.g. a mall in Orchard has a 400-lot carpark, 80 empty lots remaining, N = $20.

Hourly parking rate = $2.80 + ($20 / 80) = $2.80 + $0.25 = $3.05
