Lawyer Davinder Singh has become what is believed to be the first Singapore senior counsel to represent a foreign government in a court case abroad.

Senior Counsel Singh, chief executive of Drew & Napier, last week defended Brunei's Attorney-General before its highest court, in a civil suit that tested the Sultan's powers.

He successfully argued that the sovereign's right to discharge military officers cannot be challenged in law.

BACKGROUND STORY

SOURCE OF PRIDE

'It is a source of pride to have a Singapore lawyer arguing a case on the foreign government's behalf in a foreign court.'

Global Law Alliance's senior director Niru Pillai, noting that the Brunei authorities had opted for Senior Counsel Singh (right) despite their longstanding links to Britain's equivalent, the Queen's Counsel

Legal experts said that while senior Singapore lawyers have advised foreign governments in civil matters in the past, none has done so in court.

It would be something if he was arguing against the Sultan or the government. Who knows what other arrangements are going on in the background.

Of course you have to secure the service of a senior counsel from Singapore because they are the best and they are the best in defending the ruling powers' decision. You don't just keep a dog so that he can turn around to bite you, the hand that has fed the bugger! The Queen's Counsel are just a bunch of "RIFF RAFF" that will defend only the right cost & course! They have no loyalty to power & are only loyal to the truth with the appropriate cost! Singapore's senior counsel will always stay loyal to their handlers instruction & this time he has been instructed to "Make an example of this low life trying to question authority"! And also baii much cheaper also lah! By the way, any case against the Brunei of Sultan is a sure loss, that's why die die must represent the Sultan of Brunei, he got the money & the power ensure his winning so definitely must take up the case. Ever wonder why Lee & Lee never lose a case, because they outsource unsure cases to the bunch of rimolas swimming around them!
