The National University of Singapore's University Cultural Centre was awash with a sea of white last night, as the People's Action Party (PAP) held its annual party awards ceremony.

The Straits Times reported that about 1,600 activists and politicians, decked in the party colour, danced to a rewritten version of the Black Eyed Peas' hit, "I Gotta Feeling".

They were also treated to a medley of performances, from a hiphop dance to a sing-along version of the 1998 National Day song, "Home".

They include party bigwigs like Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong with his wife Ms Ho Ching, National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan, and Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean.

Minister Khaw, who is the PAP chairman, in his speech identified the goals of the party. He said it must find ways to improve the lives of middle-income Singaporeans, not just of the lower-income.

He also said the party must change its style to connect better with voters.

He related that over the last seven months, the party has had extensive consultations with the party activitists at the branch constituencies. The consensus: They have entered a new phase.

Mr Khaw said: 'The key political challenge in the coming years will be one of more intense competition and in a more challenging domestic environment.

'In particular, we must be able to connect with the younger generation, understand their aspirations, engage them, work with them as one Team Singapore, to advance the Singapore cause.'

Meanwhile, 372 received awards yesterday, including Mr Eric Low, who received the highest award, the meritorious service medal. This award, which started in 2006, is given to party members who have made major contributions to the party and to Singapore.

The 62-year-old had lost in the two times that he contested the Hougang constituency, in the 2001 and 2006 elections. After stepping down as branch chairman this year, he has stayed to guide his successor, Desmond Choo.

Mr Khaw also paid tribute to party members like the late Mr Choo Siu Heng, one of the first-generation activists, as well as the father of Marine Parade GRC MP Tin Pei Ling.

The party's internal consultations with party members since the general elections in May will culminate with the PAP convention today.

Eric Low bad mouthed HG after he had lost there, loosing the closeness he had built up with the residents there, who had supported him & those who admire his work but didn't support him. His master's awarded him for being a 'good & faithful cannie"!!

Uniquely Singapore! Party awards nite? They think they are entertainers? Dear, dear... we must be the only cuntry in the world where there are awards extravaganza for a political party.

The good ones have cross to WP and these not so good ones still stay with LAP (losing action party). They came, they won and the bull dozed and dispersed the voters in Hiilview Ave estate. Si bei ai sai leh! tau pai kia.

How to fix the voters of HG who did not give him a chance at earning $13,000 a month, a career enhancement. Dare he say, he will take a token sum in renumeration & serve the residents??

They incarcerated the few who are brave enough not to subscribe to their beliefs, they brankrupt those who are brave enough to question their authority, they persecuted anyone and anything who dared squeak a word against theirs, they made life a hellhole for those who are not capable enough, living on the fringes of society, they enriched themselves with their illgotten billions, milking the land for all it is worth, gambled with national reserves.... Yes... those are reasons good enough to celebrate, amuse themselves with some bad singing and entertainment, throw their arms in the air and dance badly.

An evening where all the comediansin Singapore gather to congratulate their own kind. But to be fair to the PAP, they do really have some very prominent stand-up comics. We know who they are but special mention must be made of the bestest of the them, Lim Siah Suay (Zorro). Also worth of commendation are Wong Kan Seng, Mah Bow Tan and Khaw Boon Wan, who can put on a very serious look when all that's he is saying are really really funny. So let's not grudge them for having such an evening to pat themselves on the back for bringing so much laughter to us over the years. Time and again, I go back to read what they had said and man! are they really funny, especially the punchline " betterer and bestest" from our all-time favorite Lim Siah Suay. And we should also compliment for recruiting real potential comical talent into their ranks. I mean the new recruits do have real funny lines like "kee chiu" and "I don't know what to say".

is this part of the process for her to become a MP / nxt PM?
