Workers at Apple and IBM supply plant go on strike in China - rights group

ABOUT 1,000 workers at a plant in southern China that makes components for Apple and IBM went on strike this week, a rights group said, the latest in a string of labour disputes in the country.

Hundreds of police officers, some in riot gear, deployed after staff at the factory in the manufacturing hub of Shenzhen walked out Tuesday and blocked a highway to protest long working hours, China Labour Watch said.

Staff at the plant commonly worked 100 to 120 hours of overtime a month and said they also suffered a high rate of workplace injuries, mass layoffs of older workers and frequent verbal abuse by managers, the US-based group said.

The plant, which employs 3,000 people in the Pearl River Delta - home to millions of Chinese migrant workers - is owned by Taiwan's Jingyuan Computer Group, which supplies components to Apple and IBM.

The strike ended after the company promised to reduce the amount of overtime, the rights organization said in a statement. No one at the factory could immediately be reached for comment.

It was the latest in a recent spate of worker action in China, where strikes have historically been relatively rare as the country lacks truly independent trade unions.

More than 400 female workers at a bra factory in Shenzhen, which borders Hong Kong, cut off the power and downed tools this week after a manager told one to "jump off a roof and go to hell."

And last week, more than 7,000 workers at a factory in nearby Dongguan making New Balance, Adidas and Nike shoes went on strike, clashing with police in a protest over layoffs and wage cuts.

Dear Frens,

if this go on, hopefully US companies will start moving back to the USA and keep the economy going. If US grows the world grows,,if not the world will still be in recession in 10 years time..

Those chinks should be more grateful. If it wasn't for those Ang Moh companies, they'd still be cleaning up after their pigs and chickens earning USD2 per month.

Supply and demand. Hundreds of millions of Chinese have been lifted out of poverty from the 1970s onwards, thanks to this "slavery" that you denounce.

Any idea what communism is? I'm anti-communism but I think you're doing real communists a disservice by referring to these fascists as "communists".

They could try charging us 3k for an iPhone 4S. Then we shall see what happens when competitors such as Samsung cut their profit margins in order to make gains in market share.

They ought to understand this, Large corporations are in China because of cheap labor, No workers/human rights and cheap commodities. Manufacturing moves around the globe looking for cheap labor.(Exploitation) Same case as Singapore, They moved cos we are getting expensive(Those who are still sitting here, is because the manufacturing labor cost has been stagnant and the location of this island makes it easy to move the products to the rest of the world) Large corporations move around, They dont sit at one place..Once a country has developed to a certain level they will move. So this chinaman better know that they are seen as peasants that can work in harsh environment without any Worker's right with low wages. China boom is because of export, This is dangerous cos if another 3rd world country starts producing goods cheaper and when Manufacturing firms start to move out cos of cost, Then china Economy will be in the shit.

Remembered when Singapore was in the shit, Who came and brought the Island population out of poverty? It was the MNCs, They help us come out from poverty and allowed us to have money to build this country, Our location also did help alot.

There is no need to be grateful. Even if they pray to their ang moh "gods", the ang moh companies will just as soon dump them when they find better sources for exploitation.

There is no capital gains tax in Sinkieland. What tax is there to dodge? Anyway, I highly recommend this book that sheds light on the intrinsic selfishness of man:

When the cost becomes expensive, isn't it time for the country to start abondoning basic manufacturing and move into services and subsequently to high value services. Why is Singapore still so damn reliant on manufacturing???

Only China exploits their own people. They can turn away angmor companies if they wanted to or make high wages a standard. Japan does it. Alot of other countries dont see their workers as slaves. Why mostly asians cuntry see their citizens as slaves and cocksuckers? It is because the goverment itself is a cocksucker just like peesai.

People get the government they want. If they do not want to be exploited by the government, they need to fight and get rid of the government. The problem is that for every person who is willing to fight for their rights and those of others, there are at least ten others who are willing to sacrifice the rights of others for their own benefit. That is the flaw with Confucianist thinking. You cannot fight the majority when the majority believes the minority should be denied a voice to sacrifice for the greater good, as one MP has explained very clearly.

In China, the useless CCP dogs have no qualms pandering to the whims of the ang moh investors and evicting thousands of people from their homes. I think it's a sign of low self-esteem when countries such as PRC and peesai bend over and let foreigners screw as they wish.
