Two men have been arrested by the police for purchasing $500,000 worth of NTUC Fairprice vouchers using a dishonoured cheque.

The police had received information on Nov 18 that $500,000 worth of NTUC Fairprice vouchers were purchased with a cheque which did not have a matching signature. There were also insufficient funds in the account.

NTUC Fairprice said in a statement that notices were put up to inform customers that the vouchers will not be accepted.

An alert was also sent out via the company's website, Facebook page and a media statement to advise the public to purchase vouchers only from its stores.

Despite NTUC Fairprice alerting its branches and voiding the vouchers, about $15,000 worth of vouchers were already used.

After conducting investigations, the police arrested the duo, aged 19 and 22, near Hougang Street 91 and Bukit Batok East Ave 4.

The officers managed to recover unused NTUC vouchers worth at least $484,000.

Cigarettes, liquor and electrical products which the suspects had purchased using the vouchers were also found.

The two men will be charged in court on November 21 for the offence of Cheating with Common Intention under Section 420 read with Section 34 of the Penal Code.

They can be jailed up to 10 years.

The police has advised members of the public to be wary of purchasing vouchers or any products from questionable sources as it is an offence to procure stolen goods.

Members of the public who possess any NTUC Fairprice voucher with serial numbers between 607379330 and 607404329 are requested to hand them over at any police station.

Anyone who fails to do so can be jailed up to 5 years, or slapped with a fine, or both.
