things you miss from the past?

Correct! Spent 6 good years there. ECA on Saturday mornings were spent running at the Padang and after that 'exploration' at Fort Canning which had that air of mystery (well, to me then). Once in a while, I will climbed all the way to the top and walked down to other side to visit the defunct...

The coffee shops then had an ashtray on the white (marble?) top. The ashtray is an interesting contraption where there is a button on top where you press to open the catch into the ash reservoir so that you can flicked the cigarette ashes. Also, at the bottom of the table is usually placed a...

Yes. I did consider asking the bus condcutor. But then as a small boy, even the grouchy bus conductor looks intimidating!

Ha... Yes. The ruler was my 'saviour' too but it was really difficult trying to aim for the bell contact with one end ofthe ruler while you were holding on to the other end when the bus is jerking around. I still got to stand on tip-toe though.

Back in the late 70s, I was always gripped by trepidation whenever I took the SBS bus home on a Saturday after morning ECA. To alert the driver that you wish to alight at the upcoming bus-stop, you have to press the bell but the bell contact is a strip of wire coated by a rubber sheath and is...

things you miss from the past?

Ah yes... I remembered this Maggi TV advertisement where the young boy said to his grandmother "ah mah, ni zhin gawk!" .... Something like that.

Going to the defunct New World Amusement Park was always a treat. There were all sorts of game stalls there but the shooting stall was the one I was most intrigued. At the stall, the operator will hand you a loaded rifle by pulling a lever (guess it was an air rifle?) and you are to shoot empty...

Can anyone recall the old Jalan Besar stadium hosting a car stunt event back in the 1970s? I used to stay at the walk-up apartments opposite the stadium and I remember hearing the roars of the car engines as the unit that I was living in wasn't on the high floor so I couldn't watch what's...

In the 1970s, Saturdays were special because RTS will start to broadcast televsion programmes from the afternoon. I especially looked forward to the afternoon matinee on those days.

I remember going to the defunct Bras Basah Community Centre, which was located behind the North Bridge Commercial Complex, to watch TV. The TV was perched high in a box which was locked during the day. Nearby is Liang Seah Street where a man, a little loose in the head, used to paint Liang...

things you miss from the past?

Yes. I remember RC Cola. But back then it was rather costly for me to drink it, so ended up drinking the one cup of syrupy drink just next to the drink vendor at the tuckshop at Canning Rise.

There were also magazines for kids such as Funland and Yippe (or was it Yippy) which I enjoyed reading when I was in primary school.

The TOTO booth reminds me of the similar car park booths placed at the entrance of car parks in HDB estates. I recall the car park attendant will issue a car parking ticket which she will write the time of entry and she will keep the carbon copy whenever my father parks his old Morris Minor van.

Is it true that the sultan of Brunei was also a client of Peter Lim when Peter was a stockbroker? I have heard that during his stockbroking bull run heydays, he bought each of his team members a Lexus. Unsure of the car model though.

Any idea where has Bey Soo Khiang gone to? A google on him didn't reveal anything recent since he left SIA.

Yes, if I recall correctly, Jek Kian Yee's elder brother is Jek Kian Jin, who was rather active in Silicon Valley during the dotcom mania?

GD, care to shed some light on why hewas marginalised? He was in the same class in ACS with Ronnie Tay, ex-chief of navy, and Jek Kian Yee, who was also a president's scholar.

Interesting People You Met During National Service

Yes yes, the power of the internet. Without the net, I'll probably be still wondering why the bunk has a door in the middle when the two at the ends are already sufficient. When I was doing my reservist, I heard that Camp 1 was used as bunks for reservists who had gone to Tekong for training...

Interesting People You Met During National Service

I remember CPT Chai. He was still the OO during my time. A rather 'round' officer, I must say. I saw him again at Kaohsiung airport way past midnight after I disembarked the SQ flight when I was posted to Starlight for perm staff posting. Back then, he was posted to HQ Starlight already, it...
