to put it crudely, by and large, old folks are a "cost centre" - they consume resources w/o putting any back into the economy. so the younger generations will end up footing the bill, ie our grandkids. eg more $ needed for health care, so less $ available for education etc etc

i think the days of free enterprise as we knew it in the 20th century are over. FE promotes waste and greed and social disequilibrium. but i digress...

but what about the existing hawkers who ARE allowed to ply on orchard rd? as the article said, the legit hawkers are seeing a 30-40% drop in their incomes because of competition. the crux of the matter is that orchard rd can only support X no. of ice cream vendors. too many, and they all go...

having large % of old folks will reduce our tax base. but maybe that's why they moving towards the GST model of a direct tax on consumption. the best solution is to move to JB like khaw said. i chope mersing first.
