Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle is losing its lustre

There was no queue when I went to Tai Hwa several times at around 11 am, which is my usual early weekday lunch time to avoid the office crowd. I guess many regulars voted with their wallets after he started charging $8 for his smallest bowl of BCM.

Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle is losing its lustre

I hope you are referring to a sizeable piece of fish, and not the ikan bilis or a piece of fish fillet consisting of mostly flour.

Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle is losing its lustre

Tai Hwa's cousin Tai Wah has franchises all over S'pore. Their prices are $5, $7 and $9 for their BCM. The ingredients are roughly the same, but the one noticeable difference is that the soup by Tai Wah is not as tasty.

Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle is losing its lustre

I have to order the $10 bowl of BCM these days from Tai Hwa Pork Noodle to enjoy a filling meal. The $8 small bowl hardly tickles my stomach. This stall no longer serves $6 portions.

Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle is losing its lustre

As a Bak Chor Mee fan of Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle from my primary school days, I know why it has been hailed as SG’s best BCM. However, after receiving a Michelin Star 9 years ago, their prices keep going up while the quality of their noodles and fresh ingredients do not seem to be...

Was life better in the 1980s and 1990s in S'pore?

My parents who were PMEs, were able to afford 2 landed homes in the 1960s and early 70s. The other house provided them with rental income until now, so both could retire comfortably at the age of 55.

Can S'poreans may dress fashionably even in warm weather?

You know how to dress to beat the tropical heat, yet refrain from looking sloppy or unfashionable. We do not need to layer our clothing to look stylish.

SPH deliberately singled out ACS I old boy from SG scam gang in Cambodia

In 2014, ACS I chartered 5 MRT trains to transport about 3,000 students and staff to the Schools National 'C' Division rugby final at the Sports Hub. This was a logistical solution to transport the huge group to the venue, but many criticised the use of public transport for private purposes...

Why between 40 to 60 years old will become like that?

The presence of family, friends and supportive relationships act as a buffer against stress and has positive effects on physical health. The problem of growing old is that we feel the deep loss of loved ones, chronic illness, weakening strength, cognitive decline etc. Loneliness will be our...

Why between 40 to 60 years old will become like that?

Outliving all our friends means that we have lived to an advanced age, but it is a life of loneliness, grief and lower quality of life in those later years. The extra years of life may be substantially offset by suffering from isolation.

SPH deliberately singled out ACS I old boy from SG scam gang in Cambodia

ST placed the caption “Former ACS (I) student” next to other captions like “legal trouble” and “criminal history” in the digital version, which deliberately creates an unfair and misleading association. This editorial choice deliberately misleads readers to assume a correlation and suggests...

SPH deliberately singled out ACS I old boy from SG scam gang in Cambodia

ST engaged in a selective and misleading editorial practice that unfairly and prejudicially linked ACS I to criminal conduct.

Was life better in the 1980s and 1990s in S'pore?

It was common for S'porean PMEs to retire at age 55 in the 1980s and 90s with enough savings to last another 30 years.

Serious Chiobu Sharon AU looking for job

Manpower Minister Tan See Leng is totally clueless and out of touch. Remember his motherhood statements when he advised unemployed S'poreans to "stay calm" and maintain an open mind about job opportunities? Are our local grads expected to eat grass and drink water from taps while waiting for a...

Was life better in the 1980s and 1990s in S'pore?

The drivers of economic growth in S'pore are heavily engineered by govt policies and external factors. The benefits are not distributed widely enough among the local population. This creates an impression of growth that feels detached from the everyday experiences of our fellow citizens.
