Once i had to migrate an old win nt system to a new machine, because there were software for which i didnt have the installer, i converted the nt system to a virtual machine and run it as a vm off the new machine without reinstallation.

Need to reinstall windows because there is a hardware change. Windows will crash upon bootup.

Re: Avoid Kaspersky Yes, free all the while. Every year, you will be reminded to re-register with your email but still free. During installation, choose Custom installation, to remove all other junks that come with it.
