I agree. The olden days standard Malay stall always sold nasi lemak, mee rebus, mee siam and some other varities. A stall can't survive on selling small packets of nasi lemak alone, however original it is. What I'm saying is the Chinese concept, though viewed as bastardisation by nostalgics...

Yes, sharkfin and birdnest soups are overrated and overpriced. Both are tastless and their nutrional values are also overhyped. Sharkfin soup is based on starched chicken soup with pieces of peeled crab and birdnest soup is sweetened up by boiling in rock sugar.

I think zhi char is sunset industry. In olden days, almost all coffeeshops have a zhi char stall as anchor. Nowadays, very few coffeeshops have a zhi char stall. I think it's because of the double stall space and rental space required, also lack of serious zhi char chefs.

I seldom eat Malay or Indian Muslim food. Mostly too spicy and fatty. It also tends to be more expensive and less value for money. Nothing racist, just market value comment. I like satay though. But if I can find a Chinese satay stall, I'll choose the Chinese stall since I can get pork satay there.
