Yap Keng Ho - Please provide your background

Let me be more exact. Uncle Yap puts up a photo of me and a police officer. I look FATTER than the police officer. I find that an insult. Please read between the lines :-)

Complex problem of low birth rate requires more than just throwing money at it

Why do you guys worry if there is a high birth rate? Wouldn't this then mean the govt will have no excuse to import so many FTs that take away jobs for the working class and lower income groups?

Complex problem of low birth rate requires more than just throwing money at it

Even if liberal abortion laws were partly responsible for our low birth rate, I strongly disagree to changing them. More reasons not to have a child: no freedom left spouse is irresponsible type i want to travel... my job takes up too much time... i don't like kids my spouse poor genes...

Complex problem of low birth rate requires more than just throwing money at it

Very nice and comprehensive point of view, zhihau! Your point on national identity is very important. Children are being less and less exposed to that kind of community togetherness. The education system is also a key issue. The govt does not realize sometimes people don't want to have babies...

Complex problem of low birth rate requires more than just throwing money at it

In his National Day Rally speech on 17 Aug, PM Lee spent a considerable amount of time addressing the issue of Singapore’s low birth rate and the measures proposed to alleviate the problem. As is becoming the usual PAP practice, PM Lee proposed to throw money at the problem — $1.6 billion...

Don't get your knickers in a knot ...

Straits Times link BEIJING - THE Olympic dress code applies to places never seen, it seems, with the New Zealand hockey manager banished from the field at a crucial men's match because officials objected to his players' underwear. Kevin Marr was ordered to watch the must-win match against...

SDP's policy paper on Social Security and the CPF

Some minor points I would like to comment on: 1. The statement " ... Such price fixing of flats also distorts the property market and has the tendency to cause macro-economic instability" is dubious. It is not so much that the prices of HDB flats are fixed across the board, but rather, they are...

SDP's policy paper on Social Security and the CPF

Introduction Inadequate pension savings for present and future generations of retirees has grown into crisis proportions. The need for reform in the social security system is dire. To this end, reforms must necessarily target the PAP's public housing policy, the HDB's alliance with the CPF...

5 years may be all it takes to SAVE Singapore

Written 26 June 2008 Once again, MM Lee Kuan Yew has unleashed his old, tired brand of propaganda. He told around 650 participants of a dinner forum at the Shangri-La Hotel on Wednesday that one freak election result is all it will take to wipe out Singapore’s success. This is an old refrain...

    SDP's economic Policy Paper

Does the PAP has answers apart from importing huge numbers of foreigners, taxing the poor, and throwing money at all the problems as if money alone were a panacea for everything?

    SDP's economic Policy Paper

I don't expect them to ;) Basically I believe in small govt, a free economy, and a robin hood approach to political economics.

Political rules to be relaxed & Political films to be allowed

(A more complete summary of PM Lee’s National Day Rally speech will be provided later. These short notes are my critique of various key points raised in his speech.) PM Lee said in his National Day Rally speech that an outright ban on party political films is no longer sensible. He attempted...

Allowed to Protest in Hong Lim Park!

Dear Goh Meng Seng, Welcome to the new sammyboy.com forum. The "concession" for protest at hong lim park is pathetic. The govt should realize that Singaporeans are granted freedom of assembly and expression under Article 14 of Part 4 of the constitution. The govt shows disrespect for our...

    SDP's economic Policy Paper

Well, the SDP policy paper is far from perfect, that everyone can agree. I think feedback is essential and SDP needs it. My personal take is that this is a "skeletal" paper that focusses on the broad outline without going into too much technical details. Certainly many points are debatable...

    Rising costs: Govt's helping

You are absolutely right the govt chee-mises the policies so as to befuddle people. And may I add they use statistics to mislead too. $5000 for a family per year? If you think that is a lot of money, note that up to $1500 goes into the child's PSEA account -- which means that money is not...

    Freak Election Results...

Those who are worried about freak election results will note that we already had one after independence when the PAP won all seats with an 84% majority -- surely an abnormal result in any true, functional democracy. After that freak result, Singapore continued to grow anyway. Don't worry...

Nur Dianah's Article & the Big Guns of Humanity

Precisely why it is a great article. folks should re-read the article again with this in mind. That was the main thrust of the article.

Nur Dianah's Article & the Big Guns of Humanity

It is pretty clear from the article itself that there are lots of areas which can be improved upon, from inter-racial dialogue, to National Service, to changing the mindsets of fellow Singaporeans.
