Pedra Branca team gets N-Day awards

CHIEF Justice Chan Sek Keong and Ambassador-at-large Tommy Koh were among 26 individuals honoured for their contributions in winning Singapore's claim to Pedra Branca at the Investiture of the National Day Awards ceremony last night.
They were awarded The Order of Temasek (Second Class) and The Order of Nila Utama (First Class) respectively, the highest accolades given yesterday.

The Chief Justice, a former attorney-general with more than four decades of experience in legal work and a deep knowledge of Malayan history, was recognised for his 'outstanding leadership in the Pedra Branca case'.

Late last year, after three decades of dispute over the island located 40km east of Singapore, Malaysia and Singapore met before the International Court of Justice to press their claims.

In May, the court in The Hague ruled that Pedra Branca belonged to Singapore, and the Middle Rocks, two smaller outcrops near it, to Malaysia, closing a territorial dispute which began in 1980.

The 26 honoured were a mix of lawyers and administrators from various government bodies.

Five organisations also received the President's Certificate of Commendation for the work done on the issue.

More than 400 recipients received their awards from President S R Nathan at the Suntec City Ballroom yesterday.
