WASHINGTON — A group of US soldiers is facing accusations of randomly targeting and killing Afghan civilians for sport, The Washington Post reported Sunday.

Citing army legal documents and interviews with people involved in the case, the newspaper said the case involved rogue members of a platoon from the 5th Stryker Combat Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division.

The game started last winter, when one Afghan man approached the soldiers in the village of La Mohammed Kalay, the report said.

As the man neared, one soldier created a ruse that they were under attack, tossing a fragmentary grenade on the ground, the paper noted. Then others opened fire, killing the man.

According to The Post, the unprovoked attack on January 15 was the start of a months-long shooting spree against Afghan civilians that resulted in some of the grisliest allegations against American soldiers since the US invasion in 2001.

Members of the platoon have been charged with dismembering and photographing corpses, as well as hoarding a skull and other human bones, the report said.

The father of one soldier said he repeatedly tried to alert the army after his son told him about the first killing, only to be rebuffed, The Post said.

Military documents allege that five members of the unit staged a total of three murders in Kandahar province between January and May, the paper noted.

Seven other soldiers have been charged with crimes related to the case, including hashish use, attempts to impede the investigation and a retaliatory gang assault on a private who blew the whistle, according to The Post.

Army officials have not disclosed a motive for the killings, the report noted.

But a review of military court documents and interviews with people familiar with the investigation suggest the killings were committed essentially for sport by soldiers who had a fondness for hashish and alcohol, The Post said.

The accused soldiers deny wrongdoing, the paper noted.

Pre-trial hearings are being scheduled this fall in the case of U.S. soldiers accused of forming a "kill team" to slaughter civilians for sport in Afghanistan.

The hearings are set to take place at Joint Base Lewis-McChord where the 5th Stryker Combat Brigade, in which the rogue soldiers served, is based.

The prospect of further, sickening evidence surfacing in the trial is raising fears that it will further anger Afghan civilians and play into the hands of the Taliban, the Washington Post reports.

Five soldiers are accused of murdering three Afghan men in separate incidents between January and May this year. Seven others are accused of covering up the killings.

Army documents allege the men talked about the idea of random killings of innocents for weeks after the arrival of alleged ringleader Staff Sgt. Calvin R. Gibbs, 25, of Billings, Mont. Gibbs allegedly told his fellow soldiers how easy it was for him to get away with atrocities in Iraq when he served there in 2004.

The Army documents detail that on Jan. 15, an Afghan named Gul Mudin approached the soldiers as they provided perimeter security at a meeting between Army officers and tribal leaders.

Cpl. Jeremy N. Morlock, 22, of Wasilla, Alaska, then allegedly threw a grenade on the ground, after which Pfc. Andrew H. Holmes, a 19-year-old from Boise, Idaho, fired his weapon at Mudin, according to the documents. The grenade exploded, prompting other soldiers to open fire on the villager as well, killing him.

Morlock, Holmes and Gibbs have each been charged with murder in the shooting.

In a second killing, on Feb 22, an Afghan civilian named Marach Agha was slain by rifle fire near Forward Operating Base Ramrod in Kandahar province. Few details have been released but Gibbs, Morlock and Spc. Michael Wagnon, of Las Vegas, have been charged with the murder. Wagnon has also been charged with having "a skull taken from an Afghan person's corpse."

A third murder, according to the Army charging documents, happened on May 2. Gibbs, Morlock and Adam Winfield - the son of a former Marine who said he tried to alert the Army three months earlier - are accused of throwing a grenade at, and then shooting, Mullah Adahdad, an Afghan cleric, near Forward Operating Base Ramrod.

　　“制造假象,射杀平民,肢解尸体,收藏人骨……”——9月19日出版的《华盛顿邮报》以《流氓士兵》为题,披露了驻阿美军一个五人“杀人小组”在长达几个月的时间里的“娱乐”。人命关天,一系列北约及驻阿美军“误杀”平民事件已经造成美国与阿富汗政府之间关系的紧张,而“杀人娱乐”行为的曝光,则可能进一步发酵阿富汗民众的不满。媒体披露的“杀人娱乐”事件可谓阿富汗战争2001年爆发以来,驻阿美军犯下的最恐怖、最令人发指的罪行之一。

　　制造受袭假象

　　向地面投掷一枚手榴弹,其他士兵随即向村民射击。每次事件过后,他们的报告内容千篇一律:一名村民投掷手榴弹,他们被迫还击。

　　《华盛顿邮报》援引美国军方指控文件报道,这些美军隶属驻阿富汗第二步兵师原第五斯特瑞克作战旅3排—第五斯特瑞克旅,7月返回美国后改名为第二斯特瑞克旅。

　　去年12月,一些士兵组建一个“杀人小组”。组织者名为卡尔文·吉布斯,2004年在伊拉克服役,2006年至2007年间在阿富汗服役。他们制定的计划既简单又野蛮:随意射杀平民,然后一走了之。今年1月15日,“杀人小组”找到机会“启动”了计划。当时一些美国军官前往坎大哈省一处村庄,与村内一些部族领袖会谈,吉布斯等人负责警戒。村民古尔·穆丁向他们走来,“杀人小组”一名成员向地面投掷一枚手榴弹,制造穆丁发动袭击的假象,其他士兵随即向穆丁射击,后者当场死亡。

　　令人不可思议的是,美国军方对有关“杀人小组”行为的警告信息采取了漠视的态度。

　　1月份首次射杀事件后不久,“杀人小组”一名成员温菲尔德在网上聊天时告诉父亲,一些士兵威逼他参与“杀人娱乐”,并正在策划新的谋杀。感到震惊的老温菲尔德随即向军方发出警告,先后给军方监察部门、军方刑事调查人员、参议员办公室打电话,希望军方及有关部门介入。一名接电话的军官以非常冷淡的口气告诉他,如果他儿子不向上司汇报,军方也无能为力。军方出乎意料的漠然反应,几乎让老温菲尔德的“下巴都要掉到地上”。

　　“杀人小组”的暴行被曝光事出偶然。今年5月,当军方调查该排士兵吸食大麻事件时,一名二等兵不顾威胁,举报了吉布斯等人,导致吉布斯等人被捕。

　　阿富汗一个人权组织日前的统计数据显示,自今年年初至8月8日,阿富汗共有超过1300名平民丧生,其中约300名丧生的平民需要由北约部队和阿富汗政府军负责。

　　此间舆论认为,阿富汗战争爆发以来,披露出来的一系列北约及驻阿美军“误杀”平民事件已经造成美国与阿富汗政府之间关系的紧张,对正在实施的美国阿富汗新战略构成挑战。阿富汗民众的支持对美军在阿富汗的行动至关重要,阿富汗新战略试图以增兵和保护平民来赢得人心,以确保美军可以如期于明年7月开始撤军行动。如果说“误杀”平民已经置驻阿美军于尴尬地位,有意“杀人娱乐”行为的曝光,则可能进一步发酵阿富汗民众的不满,驻阿美军失去的不仅是更多的人心,还会失去美军驻阿的“合理性”。
