PETALING JAYA: An investigation has been launched into allegations claiming that a woman died after consuming a supplement, says the Health Ministry.

In a statement, the ministry’s Food Safety and Quality Division said an early investigation revealed that the product contains glutathione, an active ingredient listed under the Negative List of the Drug Registration Guidance Document (DRGD).

“Therefore, the product does not comply with Section 13B(2)(d) of the Food Act 1983, which prohibits the addition of any substance that is not permitted under the Act or any regulations under it,” it said in a statement on Sunday (Nov 9).

It added that further investigations are being carried out on the matter, including verifying the authenticity of the claim and the details of the product.

“This includes product details such as labelling compliance, ingredients used, manufacturing premises, importer, and distribution in the local market.

“We are also tracing the original source of the claim to confirm its validity,” it said, adding that checks also found the product was being sold on online shopping platforms.

The ministry said there have yet to be any social media posts found that could confirm the allegation.

“Based on preliminary searches, there are no social media posts from close family members or acquaintances confirming the alleged death of a woman after consuming the said health food product,” it said.

The ministry urged anyone with further information that could assist the division to contact 03-8885 0796 or email [email protected]

It was previously reported that a woman had allegedly died after taking a RM20 supplement she bought online.

I didn't know that glutathione is considered banned item. Unless you are talking about fake product.

AI Overview

Glutathione supplements are generally considered safe for most people, especially when taken orally for a short duration. Side effects are typically mild and vary depending on the method of administration (oral, inhaled, or intravenous).

Common Side Effects
  • Gastrointestinal Issues: The most frequently reported side effects of oral glutathione supplements are mild digestive problems, including abdominal cramps, bloating, gas, nausea, and loose stools.
  • Allergic Reactions: While uncommon, some people may experience allergic reactions such as skin rashes, hives, itching, or a bad taste of sulfur in the mouth.
  • Injection Site Reactions: For injections, mild pain, redness, swelling, or bruising at the site are common and usually temporary.
  • Headaches and Dizziness: Some users report headaches or feeling lightheaded, especially with injections.

Rare but Serious Side Effects and Risks
  • Breathing Problems: Inhaled glutathione has caused breathing difficulties and bronchial spasms in some individuals, particularly those with asthma. People with asthma should avoid the inhaled form.
  • Organ Function Issues: High doses or long-term use of intravenous (IV) glutathione may impact liver or kidney function. There have been rare reports of severe liver injury and kidney dysfunction.
  • Severe Allergic Reactions: In rare cases, severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) can occur, with symptoms like swelling of the face/throat or difficulty breathing, which require immediate medical attention.
  • Zinc Deficiency: Long-term use of glutathione supplements has been linked to potential zinc deficiency.
  • Infection Risk: Unregulated IV injections carry a risk of infection (e.g., sepsis, HIV, hepatitis) if administered in non-sterile environments or by untrained individuals. Regulatory bodies like the FDA have warned against non-medical use of IV glutathione due to these risks.

Who Should Avoid Glutathione?
It is recommended to consult a healthcare provider before starting glutathione supplementation, especially for individuals who are:
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding (due to lack of research on safety).
  • Asthmatic (especially with inhaled forms).
  • Undergoing chemotherapy (glutathione may interfere with treatment effectiveness).
  • Taking other medications, as interactions may occur (e.g., acetaminophen, blood thinners).
  • Have pre-existing kidney or liver conditions.

Anyone who takes panadol frequently or regularly should take glutathione (eg. Setria brand) to protect their liver and kidneys. Your body uses glutathione to detoxify panadol.

If you go to the hospital for panadol overdose, the doctor will prescribe you NAC, which is merely a precursor of glutathione,so if you can get glutathione, it's better to take it directly instead of NAC, and glutathione has less side effects than NAC.
