SINGAPORE - To prepare Singapore for the future, the Government is refreshing its approach to tackling difficult social issues such as inequality, and transforming the education system, said Minister for Education Desmond Lee.

In a rapidly changing world, it is no longer enough to equip younger Singaporeans with knowledge alone, as the knowledge imparted today may well be outdated tomorrow, Mr Lee said during the debate on the President’s Address in Parliament on Sept 25.

What is more important is for younger Singaporeans to be agile and resilient, to be able to think critically and learn continuously, so that they can navigate a more uncertain environment, said Mr Lee, who is also Minister-in-charge of Social Services Integration.

He gave the example of one student who, despite the abuse she endured from her father, found success in her studies and now works with a therapeutic group home for children where she had once stayed.

This is an example of how not everyone takes the same path to success, and that success can mean different things to different people, he said.

Mr Lee said the education system must provide pathways for children to flourish, no matter their starting point, support them to pursue their aspirations, and cultivate strong values so that they give back to society.

He said Singapore has been moving away from a “narrow meritocracy” that ties achievement solely to grades and paper qualifications, to becoming a society that recognises that success comes in many forms.

“Whether in the arts, technology, sports or other fields, we want to celebrate the diverse talents of every individual and respect the contribution of every worker,” he said.

Mr Lee noted that the shift cannot happen overnight, but is a multi-year effort.

In the past, success was largely measured by grades, with the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) graded on a bell curve and pitting pupils against one another, he said.

Don't be conned by this exercise. The outcome is predictable.
They will craft policies that will benefit their spawn and mask it as for the benefit of the masses.

I know of two couples whose dotters landed 'scholarships' at elite Brit Shyte unis, who can well afford the tuition bill. Put it this way. They don't live in HDB and 120k CoE is nothing. The kids who have to struggle and make decent grades go without. Meanwhile PAP pours money on foreign students including three Fakestinian terrorists in training. Still want to call Sinkieland home???

Nothing to complain. Sinkies voted for this.

You can never have meritocracy when you restrict positions by race and gender eg GRCs, reserved President, male NSmen

SINGAPORE—Singapore’s central bank kept its monetary-policy settings unchanged as it struck a somewhat cautious tone on the inflation outlook, and economic growth exceeded expectations.

Core inflation is likely to trough in the near term and rise gradually over 2026 as some of the factors damping inflation fade, the Monetary Authority of Singapore said Tuesday. It has now held policy parameters steady since July, after two rounds of easing

Local singer and producer Hong Junyang has been declared bankrupt, according to a government gazette of bankrupt individuals published in September. The 44-year-old, best known for finishing third in the first season of Project Superstar in 2005, confirmed the news in an interview with AsiaOne on 13 Oct.

Hong explained that his financial troubles stemmed from debts linked to his Thai street food restaurant chain, The Original Boat Noodle, which struggled heavily during the COVID-19 pandemic. "Ever since Covid-19 started, it has been very, very tough for us, up till our closure… I tried my best,” he told the digital media outlet.

He added that this was his first foray into the food and beverage industry, and he lacked experience managing such a business. The chain had outlets in several major malls, including VivoCity, Suntec City, Bugis Junction, The Seletar Mall, Northpoint City, and Changi City Point. He also declined to reveal the size of his debts.

Hong is "thankful and grateful" for the support of his loved ones. He said: "I have family and close friends who stood by me and offered help to me. They are always there for me. But I feel that it's only responsible that I face this myself and face the music because this is the right thing to do."
