Malaysian celebrity Winnie K has revealed that she was scammed of over $116,000 (RM380,000) in 2023.
Kok said she was introduced by a friend to a man claiming to be a "datuk" involved in property development. "He showed me his upcoming project and prospects, which my friend had previously mentioned to me,” she was quoted as saying at a press conference by The Star.
The "datuk" promised to appoint her as an exclusive brand ambassador with a one-year contract worth between RM800,000 and RM1 million.
Kok said they had a meeting after he returned from China in late September 2023, where he asked for help as he could not access his funds while in Malaysia. "He showed me his WeChat e-wallet balance, which showed a huge amount of money as an assurance,” she said.
Kok was initially reluctant to lend him money but relented as he was "very convincing".
In total, she transferred RM380,000 to the fake 'datuk' over a two week period before he vanished.
“I felt mentally unstable and got stressed out after losing all my hard-earned money... I’m here today to share my story and raise awareness,” she said.
