Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has expressed his deep gratitude to those who fought for Singapore as well as the pioneers who rebuilt the country after World War II (WWII).

In a Facebook post on Friday (Sept 12), PM Wong wrote: "As we mark 60 years of independence, we remember and honour all who defended Singapore, as well as the pioneers who endured the war and rebuilt our home from its ruins."

"The peace and prosperity we enjoy today rests on their sacrifices. We can never fully repay this debt.

"But we can, and must, ensure that the price of war is never forgotten. Let us uphold the values of courage, resilience and determination they showed — and continue safeguarding Singapore and our way of life, together as one people."

The Japanese Occupation of Singapore ended on Sept 12, 1945 — when Supreme Allied Commander in South-east Asia Lord Louis Mountbatten accepted Japan's surrender at the former City Hall.

"For many of us in the post-war generations, memories of that time live on through the voices of our parents and grandparents," PM Wong wrote.

"The Occupation was a dark chapter — marked by fear, suffering and the loss of innocent lives."

Speaking about the Sook Ching massacre — which he described as one of the most tragic episodes of this period in Singapore's history — PM Wong said that "these events remain deeply etched in our national memory".

A commemoration ceremony to mark the 80-year anniversary of the end of WWII was held at the Kranji War Memorial on Friday.

It honoured those who fought to defend Malaya and Singapore, as well as civilians who died during the war.

During the ceremony, a remembrance bell rang five times to mark the years of the war.

Local organisations, veterans and foreign dignitaries also laid wreaths at the event. This was followed by the laying of Senbazuru (one thousand paper cranes) by the Japanese community.

What ever happened in the past is gone.. what important is to look forward and act accordingly, what is the point of dwelling in the past where there is nothing a person could have done?

In the 1st place… I would not be so stupid to confront a criminal or be a hero. I would call that the authority or police force if I see a crime that is happening or committing.

We have a brain to process to think and made the best decision in the process what is the best suite situation at the moment… that made a difference between a thinker and a non thinker

Speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum on November 19, 2025, Wong expressed hope that both countries could find ways to de-escalate tensions and address their complex issues. He highlighted Southeast Asia as an example, noting how the region has "put history aside" and progressed in its relationship with Japan over time. Wong emphasized that Singapore and other Southeast Asian nations support Japan taking on a larger role, including in security matters, as it contributes to greater stability in the region.

He who does not remember history is condemned to repeat it.

The past is gone, but that's not the point. The pertinent issue is: have the perpetrators repented, made reparations, and committed themselves to not commit those barbarities again?

For Germany, yes. For Japan, no. No apology, no reparations, Unit 731 denial, comfort women denial, annual visits to Yakusuni to honor war criminals, and remarks by fascist far right leaders like Takaichi hinting of remilitarisation.

You may be too young to understand what our parents and grandparents went through, but I can tell you many of my generation genuinely fear a militant Japan.

LW should have kept his mouth shut, like how the rest of ASEAN have kept quiet. He refused to comment on Takauchi's provocative remark but said China should learn to 'put history aside', subtly but clearly putting the blame on China for escalating the spat.

Singapore is a peesai country and should sit on the fence. If you can't make a neutral and objective statement, then shut up. Now we are seen in the region as pro-US, pro-Israel, pro-Japan... all very undesirable attributes in a multi-polar world.

Showing anti-Japanese sentiments is the fastest way to dig our graves before we could say knn. Btw, OP should know that PRC does not consider us to be their own kind.

The Chinese and Southeast Asian experiences differ significantly in magnitude. For instance, comparing the Nanjing Massacre and the Sook Ching massacre, the death toll in Nanjing is estimated to be three to five times higher. Additionally, there was no equivalent to Unit 731 in Southeast Asia. While Southeast Asia has largely moved on from these events, the Chinese have found it much harder to forget and move forward.

That's why I said just shut up. Diam. Like the rest of ASEAN. Don't geh kiang.

As far as I am concerned, Sook Ching was perpetrated by Nihonjin. PRC wasn't even in existence then. You may be Indian, so don't realize how Malaysian and Singaporean Chinese suffered during the Occupation.

Maybe Lawrence Wong's father was a Jap collaborator like LKY and Nathan, we don't know.

Musha Incident

The Musha Incident (Chinese and Japanese: 霧社事件; pinyin: Wùshè Shìjiàn; Wade–Giles: Wu4-she4 Shih4-chien4; rōmaji: Musha Jiken; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Bū-siā Sū-kiāⁿ), also known as the Wushe Rebellion and several other similar names, began in October 1930 and was the last major uprising against colonial Japanese forces in Japanese Taiwan. In response to long-term oppression by Japanese authorities, the Seediq indigenous group in the settlement of Musha (Wushe) attacked a school, killing 134 Japanese and two Han Taiwanese children. In response, the Japanese led a counter-attack, killing 354 Seediq in retaliation. The handling of the incident by the Japanese authorities was strongly criticised, leading to many changes in Aboriginal policy.
